MK stands for Mark. All mark-1's would have one body style, mark2's would be the next major change. Like C1-C6 with the corvettes ... when there's a major change in the bodystyle, they add one more to the number. Both can be the same because they used similar parts/designs for golf/rabbit and jetta for a long time (I believe they still do...) with the sole difference being one is a hatch, the other is a 4-door sedan. So, instead of saying years (i.e. with an mx6, someone might not know a 4-cyl '92 is very different from a 4-cyl '93, but the same as a 4-cyl '87), so we identify the "generations" only some companies call it Mk#, C#, etc. If there is none specified, it's first-gen, second-gen, third-, and so on. Usually nothing changes mid-gen, there are minor aesthetic and interior changes, sometimes different entertainment, spoiler options, or minor changes to fix previous issues, but usually it stays pretty-much the same.
There, now that I've written a full novel, on for questions, comments, etc.
