eclipses are popular because they are cheap, can be awd and turbo. turbo cars are popular because it's easy to make big hp with. check out http://www.dsmtuners.com
take a look at my garage... you'll see the #1 street racing car there

im in some what the same situation as adri im looking for a good street car. so far my eyes have been caught by some nissan skylines in japan. would it be a good buy to buy the car and have it shipped here from japan for like 20 to 23 thousand dollars? it has a lot of aftermarket stuff like the coolant system and exaust along with rims and a body kit. I have also heard that it is illegal or something to have the stering wheel on the right side of the car if anybody knows anything about that.

Skylines are excellent cars but are not DOT approved for street use. You can get it but only use it at the track.. and i've heard that's only for 1 year.

Motorex used to do that and it would cost about $50K for them to do the paperwork etc. But they got busted for fraud because they weren't doing it right. So no more skylines...You might want to find a legal on in the US already

yeah those are some nice cars i've seen a few of those when they are tuned up. if i get accepted to wyotech which it looks like i am that would be a good school project specially if i get into the advanced diagnostics course.

If you can find one, the older evos are nice. Like gen1 and 2 (that'd be evo I-VI)... I've seen some conversions done with the Mitsubishi ... umm ... Mirage I think it is. Very similar bodystyle, and most people will not know those cars or recognize them for what they are. Very, very fast and light too. Plus, and a big plus at that, there are a bunch of DOT-approved versions coming in from Canada, and you can re-badge (and kinda sleeper) one with Mirage parts.
Also, v8 is great... i.e. my firebird (389cid with work) is a mid-12 car (well, was - before I raised my shift from 4000 to 8500 with supporting mods like intake, exhaust, heads/cam). Should be in the 11's by now. Hell, even the smartcar has been built up (busa motor swap), so really, you can do whatever you want to.

I found a fairly nice eclipse but it doesn't look like the engine is in the greatest condition. No evo yet though. i was thinking maybe a supra if i could find one they are just as good as skylines and i don't think they are any DOT prblems with them.

......tell us your budget?
skylines are overrated anyways.
and if youre seriously got the money to pay $50k for one from Japan, just drop that chunk of change towards the new USDM one.

i've been looking into a lot of eclipses and spyders, and also lancer ES, the oz rally isn't to bad either and all those cars can be found for 5-7 if you get 98-00 which look better anyway IMO with kits on them and stuff.
Or you could also go Subaru STI

The eclipses (later gens ... incl. the convertible), Lancer ES, and OZ Rally are all very slow cars for the money. Plus, the bulk of them are very unreliable. STI is a decent race car, same for lancer evolution, but they're both well known to have drivetrain problems.
