Ok, it really bugs me that my wife and I get pulled over in her Integra with a perfectly legal Greddy exhaust that isn't even loud. How do all the Harley bikes with straight pipes that you can hear from 2 miles away get away with it? I used to live near a freeway onramp and the noise from those guys accelerating was unbelievable. I'm just curious as to why they get away with it. Do cops let them go because Harleys have become trendy the last decade?

I agree. Harley pipes are much worse than just about any car exhaust I've heard on the street. They're subject to the exact same laws but they don't drive around much after 10 pm when I'm on the street, so I don't pull many over.

Drive safe,

Officer Hoyt is quite correct. Later at night a loud Harley is rather easy to locate. There was a time when there were several "biker" bars in San Jose that didn't appreciate the services of the Police Department. Especially around 2:00 a.m. However, times have changed and you need a significant income to afford a Harley these days. They are still subject to the same noise laws as cars. But, they tend not to draw as much attention making the commute home from a Silicon Valley based business at 5:00 p.m. as a street racer at 3:00 a.m.

Hello SgtGrant and welcome to the board! Thanks for the response, I completely understand that and expect it if I was at the races. It's the times when my wife and I are going to get groceries or something and we get pulled over for it even though it's a legal exhaust. I guess I'm just more aware of the Harley's because I used to live next to a freeway onramp (85 to 237) and heard a LOT more Harleys than I did racers.

Thanks for the welcome. I probably won't spend nearly as much time here as Ofc. Hoyt. I just stumbled onto the site after reading some stuff laying around the office. Looks like Ofc. Hoyt is doing an excellent job though. I hope most folks here keep in mind that most of us cops have been around the block a few times ourselves. Wasn't that long ago that I was driving a slammed 280Z w/ about $10k in modifications. It was stolen and I moved on to different interests. Most of the cops you guys run into don't take enforcement personal. It's just business.

I used to ride a 600cc Honda CBR. I was in the city and went into a tunnel on a fast moving street (posted speed was 55mph). I got pulled over by a cop who said my exhaust was "too loud". After bothering me for about 20min and having his buddy on a horse making a big deal about nothing they let me go. My bike wasn't as loud as some of my friends bikes.
Cars are just more abundant and easier to catch. Not that I was running.
