the price of drift...

Well, after clutch-kicking my way around the city of Sydney for a couple of months now, the inevitable has finally occurred...

I broke my gearbox... :(




Setting up a drift into a left hand turn, i cluthed it hard in second gear in order to break traction and swing the rear end out... only to be met by a horrible CLUNK!, followed by a bone-jarring clatter while the car vibrated so much i thought the windows were going to fall out!

i immediatley pulled over, cursing to myself, as i was about 15 miles from home, realised what i'd done, shouted a few obsceneties at the car & then proceeded to drive all the way home without using 2nd gear...


so i pulled the gearbox out on the weekend & split it open to see exactly what happened. i knew i'd done a good job when i unbolted the drain plug on the 'box, to be greeted by a fistful of gear teeth flowing out along with the oil... :eek:

in the end, it turned out i'd totally stripped second gear, and pretty much wrecked every other gear in the process... :D


so in went the 'backup' gearbox which i accquired from a friend (same type of gearbox btw, a Jap-spec T-50 out of an AE-86 Levin) and im back terrorising the streets once again!!! :cool: woohoo! :D

ive managed to break my entire drivetrain now, one bit at a time... first the 16V engine, then the diff, now the transmission. :D


anybody else broken any major components lately??? :D

That would suck if he hadnt had ANOTHER T50 sitting just waiting for him to break it!
So are you replacing the gears or just throwing the old box away?

i was thinking about getting a new gearset made up... this time straight-cut with dog engagement gears (no synchros)... very noisy, but at least ill know it'll cope with the abuse i throw at my car. :D



and yes, it does suck when you break the gearbox... whether you've got a backup or not...

i was covered in gear oil for an entire day while i changed them over.


do you know how bad gearbox oil smells???? :eek: :o ;[

Well what does a T50 cost you and how hard is it to find one? I'd be looking at moe than the price of a 20v for the box & diff & assorted crap- around NZ$1200. Even for a C52 for my MR2 i'd be looking at around $750. It sucks ass.

Gave up on AE85 conversion, now driving a free but dying KP61.

ohh yea! stinky eggs for days! hey, is that a thottle baod for each cylinder i see? (went to your site). if so, does that come stock on your car. if it doesn't come stock, did it add alot of hp? :)

yep, one throttle per cylinder.

the 4AGE 20V comes stock with quad throttle bodies, but covered with this stupid air box. i took that off (as the engine was originally in a FWD, when i mounted it in my car, the air box hit the brake master cylinder) and added bell-mouthed trumpets to each of the throttle bodies, covered with the red foam filter socks. it goes alright... ;)

I broke my driver side door handle.:(

Now i cant get into my car i have walk to the passangerside and open my door.

That sucks man I hate not haveing my car. Having to wait for it to be bak on the streets.
