i know everyone loves hachis (well, not everyone, but bear with me), but aren't the coupes lighter and stiffer? why does the hatch make a better car for drifting? is it a better car for drifting? do you like it? why it, and not a coupe? please fill me in!!

I prefer the hatch, just by looks alone. This goes for S13's (180sx vs. s13) Fox Body mustangs, and any other car that came in a 'notch back' and hatch. Personal preferance. Plus you can shag a bit more in the hatch, and carry more shit around. Not to meniton better access to my soon-to-be roll cage mounted spare ;)

i like the looks of them better too...i was just wondering if there was something technical about them that made them better for drifting.

Well, on club4ag people were discussing this as well. It has been said that the hatchback has a little bit more weight on the rear which would aid traction, but i doubt the difference is that great. I also heard that the coupes are a little bit more stable and stiff. Personally, I like the hatchback better.:D

if you don't mind me asking, why exactly do you like your hachi better? is it just looks?

Well, the storage space is real handy and the looks are a bit better. But then again, you can't really be picky in this market.

BTW Hachi refers to "8" in Hachi-roku "86" not the hatch back.
Hatch or coupe (or notch back/trunk back)

I didn't know that... so wether or not it is a hatch or coupe, it is still considered a hachi if it is a AE86?

so now that i am re-edgimicated, i still want to know why does everyone like the hachi so much?

yes, wether its a hatchback or a coupe, it is still a hachi. as Rich said, 'hachi' is short for 'hachi-roku'... meaning '86' in Japanese.

they call it '86' because of its chassis code, which is AE-86. cool?

and everyone likes the hachi because that kid Takumi drives one.... sad, but true. :(

heh,

yeah i know man... i was just being a goose as usual... :p

i bought my first hachi back in 1995 & had no idea about what the car was or anything like that, i just bought it because it looked cool & it had an electric sunroof!! :D

then once i got into driving it, i realised what a great car it really was & did a bit more research on it... i then found that it actually had a great racing heritage & was one of the most revered cars in all of Japan.

that first one got written off by a drunk driver one night & i was lucky to walk away without a scratch.

i bought my current hachi about 2 years ago & slowly built it up to what it is now. its pretty much exactly how i want it (except for the awful wheels... :( ) and im very very happy with it.

and just to set the record straight... i only watched Initial D for the first time about a month ago. :D i thought it was pretty cool and all, but wouldnt base my life around it like some losers seem to be doing these days... ;)

back to the original topic... :D

i bought a hatchback because thats the only bodyshape that they sold here in Australia. we never got the coupe.

im sorta glad too, the coupe looks too much like a normal POS AE-82 Corolla sedan... *yuck* i dont like the look of em at all...

they shouldve made em all hatchbacks. :D

thank you all so much for enlightening me :D

i like the looks of the hatch much better also, i think the 82s look ass-ugly.

i have never seen initial D. prehaps i should go watch some of it. i cannot comprehend people that base their lives off of movies and cartoons...it reminds me of when i was 5 and wanted to be batman.

But here is a real shit, uncle ben's rice are too hard and you can't really cook rice with anything other than a rice cooker.

trunk or no trunk, regardless, its the same freakin car.

Hachis are cool, but the drift car that makes me cream my pants are S13's. I don't know what it is about them, but shit, they're fuckin tight. I think they're sexier than S14's and S15's.

for the record, the hatch is better looking (my opinion) but rarer here in nz, and about 20 pounds heavier than the coupe. the AE86 is popular because of its balance, handling, the very nice 4AGE, the fact its RWD. i have a friend with one and its nondescript, he gets ignored when he drives through town in it, but he loves it all the same. its one of the rare toyotas with personality (my opinion again)

and the notchback mustang is sexier, but thats the only case i can think of where a notchback looks better. the 180SX is dead sexy;)

and once again, i hate all who got the opportunity to buy AE86s. they're just too rare in nz to get my hands on one for anything less than twice what i paid for my MR2.:(

AE86 are cool if a bit underpowered.. but ya I do like the looks of the lift back better than the truck back..the 4AG is not tthe greatest motor but it does well in the AR86 and AW11..oh and the toyota atlantic cars:)

speaking of underpowered.....

I am currently doing initial parts sourcing for a swap that will yeald a N/A motor, 9lbs lighter then the stock 4a-ge, but produce 245ftlb and 180hp at the crank. Let's hope it all works out for my silver car. Not quite sure about the whole thing, this one is still in the... "damn this would be kinda cool" stages.

nice as 240hp would be i do like engines to last more than a thousand race miles... and no, there is no greater engine than the 4AGE, and no other four sounds as good as a 4AG with carbs. none.

damn rich, what are you doing to make that much power and be lighter than stock? :D

well, I don't quite know if it's a go yet, but let's just say it's twice the motor the 4ag is ;)

eh nope....

bigger, fewer valves, and 3 less cams

I am still in the planning stages, but it's a 4.5L all alum V8.

shit! 4.5l V8 but lighter than standard 4AGE? what you on?
16 valve pushrod all-alum V8??? so it wont upset balnce, but only 180hp from 4.5 l??? crazy, i was expecting twice that!
tell me more... intriguing... bet it'll have a nice engine note though!:D

Any ways all you guy except DJ need to shut up.
hahahahhaha j/k
I own both a hatch and coupe and i'll tell u the coupe feels more tight.
it seems faster in the twisties and in stock form is 45 Kilos lighter, not 10 lbs as some one had said.
Also of you base a car buy looks just go buy an Integ and stay away from my GTS's OK. hahaha
Honestly at fist i thought the coupw was Gay then it grew on me.
So i would rather lose my left nut than my (coupe)GTS.

well this v8 is built by caddy. yes a mom's car. The reason the HP is so low, the peak torque is found at like 2300rpm. If you take a look at the application of the engine and it's 8.5:1 cr you can tell why it's so low. FWD V8's are not exactly the most roomy of engine bays. This means the exhasut flow, and intake track are REAL tight, and cause problems. Fiero guys that mount these in their cars are pushing about 225-250 off minor mods, and better exhaust. :D that should be enough to roast the rear tires. Adn the torque.... hehehee

with a comp ratio like that why not force-feed, i mean you got plenty of torque to use?
so what model caddy is it out of? and what gearbox etc are you gonna use to mate it up- W58 or something?

no, he's going to leave it FWD...

the worlds first FWD hachi :D

prblem is now, that when he tries to drift, he's gonna have to do it in reverse!!! :p

*i think its a sacrelige that youre putting a V8 in your car, Rich... :( :p
