I suggest you check out www.club4ag.com
Chances are that your car's parts are really old and worn out. You might want to have your shox replaced, timing belt changed if haven't, spark plugs and wires, compression check, you know full tune up stuff.
The brakelines will probably be all crusty and stuff also, when we installed springs and shox on my friends 86 I saw how old and beat up the stock lines were. So you might want to look into that. His braking is pretty weak also, on my car your suppose to change them after 5 years now imagine yours are probably more like 15 years old compared to mine. Check rotors too see if they're warped.
If you wanna get started off right make sure the car runs properly then begin the racing modifcations.
Check out junkyards since your car is pretty old you'll be able to find lots of parts for it, like supra rims, AFM adapters, LSD, stuff....
First things first....
Welcome to the world of the AE86. As Max has stated you are going to find that your mods will tend to cost more then you payed for the car. (my carbs cost me 1/4 the amount I payed for my 86) From what I have been finding, the '85 was the most common year for the stock LSD. The easiest way to check for this is on the silver plate on the fire wall. The lower line of numbers will have "T50 28_" The blank with be either a 2 or a 3. If it's a 283, you have a damn good chance at lucking out with a stock LSD.
Any moron can tell if his rotors are warped just by stopping the car. you will feel a pulse through the brake pedal. Put your car on jack stands or a lift, and go over it with a fine toothed comb. Look for obvious signs of damage, or leaks. Get these fixed first. There is no reason to start fixing on something, when you NEED to do work on other areas. I have 230,8xx miles on my stock engine. My timing belt went out on me at 230,253. Don't worry about that right now. The blue-top (large port) 4a-ge which you have, is a non inferental engine. This means that when the timing belt goes, your valves do not become close friends with your pistons. This is a good thing, trust me. There are a few mods you can perform on your own with a very small budget. One of the first things you should do is replace your cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs. Change the oil in the engine, trans, and rear end. (when doing the rear end make sure you use LSD oil for an LSD) Pull your wheels off and check your pads. If they are getting worn, change them out, and flush your brake system. The AFM adapter from any Nissan/Datsun z-car with the L28e will bolt onto the AFM on your hachi. I have a write up on this if you check out my web site...

You have more then enough power in your stock car to learn to drive it. The AE86 is a great car for beginers. the reason behind this is it's ability to teach you how to drive. It is VERY hard to take a stock hachi past the limit, and if you do, they are VERY forgiving. I would say, keep the suspension and engine stock untill you know that you need something more. You will know when this point is reached. Don't just start throwing money at the car, if you do, you will grow to hate it quickly. As said, get on

if you have any tech questions, also for parts, if you need them. Beyond that, if you need anything, hit me or maxfrommisawa up. I have two parts cars sitting in storage, and he has a couple. Also, don't be ashamed of hitting junk yards for parts. From what I am hearing, Ca is running out of parts in the yards, even from the SR5's. Thankfully, there are tons of them here in seattle, so if you need shit, feel free to ask.
Again, welcome and good luck!
p.s. not to be anal, but you have an ae88, not an ae86 ;)

When will people learn that there is proper junk yard etiquette!
If you want parts on a car that is being pulled apart by another, you ASK if they need that part!

I might be trading my 510 for a AE86(AE88?) 85 Corolla GTS (hatch)with LSD. The engine in it is sh1t but the guy im tradeing said he has plans to pu tthe 1.8L 7AFE engine in it. It makes MASS amounts of torque (155) and would this be a good engine to mod? COuld it handle addons and maybe a turbo later on? I heard it wont but I just want a second or third opinion on the matter. I was thinking about getting forged pistons and rods as well for it. DOes anyone have info where i can get these parts? I am new to the toyotas and jus want to know what are good aftermarket part suppliers? Any info will help!
THanks
