I have this thing about the 510...its 1 of those kool old skool cars and I really liek it. but I'm also obsessed with drifting (I do it with my R/C car right now due to the lack of a real car) I've looked into AE86s and putting the trueno bumper on it with the GT apex upgrades. but I'm just wondering if the 510 could drift... I'm kinda worried about the clutch and tranny...

actually i was wondering the same thing... i dont see why not, the car is awesome on the autox track. bolt in a Z LSD and you should be ready to go... the only problem is if you need the parking brake to break traction your gonna be SOL since its the truck type under the dash. -Ninja

The Z-LSD (R180) is a pain in the ass to install on the dime. You need to retain the Z swing arms, and half shafts. I was running a scooby LSD in my dime, and it worked great!

As for the E-brake, just install a trans tunnel mounted hand brake from a 240sx like I did :)

In a short course like auto-x drifting all the time can actually hurt your times. Want to break the ass end loose, get a good clutch, 4.11's, and about 175hp and you will do it more then you want to. I had 224hp to the rear tires, 4.11/LSD, and that bastard would send tires into bouts of spin if I sneezed wrong.

you can drift anything you want..

but if you're talking about serious drifting (ie serious abuse of the car), i think you should go with something else.. I think 510's are too rare and cool to get smashed into a wall/rail/whatever

that's my opinion anyway

Personally, I'd tell you to go with the GTS if you want to drift and drive on the street. The AE86 is a newer, more reliable car with a better chassis/engine/etc...

It can likely take more abuse than a 510, just based on the fact that it's newer, and I wouldn't want to wreck the little chrome bumpers on the 510 by driving it on the street. Get the AE86 first, you won't be disappointed. If you still want a 510 later, get one (like me!)

I have both an '86 Corolla GTS hatch (street car) and a '71 510 2-door (non running project car)

makes sence.... the AE86 just doesn;t have that "coolness" to though that 510 does lol. oh well the Hatchi is still an awsoem car.

I have seen the Japan equal to the 510's (Carina/Bluebird) drifting at circuits, they have excellent weight ratio. Common motor swaps are 4AGE carb'd, or SR20's, N/A and turbo.
Wanna drift it? its all about a good LSD.. not stock viscous crap, im talking a good tight 1.5 or 2 way diff. Of course if your a cheap ass then just shim it or weld the diff. But a tight rear end is essential.

I like old school too... this old GTR lives close to my house, so i parked my friends Skyline next to it for a nice photo op...

You can pull the LSD out of a Subaru and it's a bolt in swap.
