OK, i suspose i should at least know something about this but i don't so... How do you drift??!! can someone give me a few pointers/ tips to try. and are any of these cars good for drifting? : Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo '85, Nissan Skyline R31 1989 (aust release: RB30), Toyota corolla seca twincam 94'.

practice gripping
then when you're doing a grip with your tires to the limit, halfway thru the turn, turn a bit harder, you should get oversteer
and there aren't too many posts in this section, read thru them all, we've gone thru a lotta techniques

OK first of all u need a good place to do it.
I would recomend trying to drift on flat ground first.
OK this is really easy way to get a drift to start.
Try to warm up your tires.
OK drive in a strait line until u hit about 100kmph.
jab the brake at about 60-80% (push cluch in)
when u feel the wait of the car in the front start to turn.
let the clucth out slowly and hit the gas.
dont mash the gas.... just gas it like you are exiting a corner.
If you still cant slide the ass out get some sand and spread some out but do it slowly.
like throw some sand and if it dont help throw some more etc etc.

of all the cars you listed, only the Skyline is capable of proper drift.... its the only RWD.
all the other cars are FWD & would only be able to ass-drag. :p
ever thought about an S12 Gazelle or an AE-86 Sprinter??
will the budget stretch to an N/A S13 Silvia??? (theyre getting pretty cheap nowadays...)

okay, i'm new, this is my first post and i probably sound retarded, but i'd like some help. i have a mki mr2 na, and i've tried a little of this drifting stuff- multiple corners, not powerslides!- in wet & dry carparks. now i've learnt different ways to lose the rear, from just handbrake to inertia, going through the s bends we set up is sweet. my problemis the exit, when i get through the corners i keep turning the car right around, especially in the wet. is there any method to get a fishtailing car to straighten out except careful countersteer? i'm from new zealand, and the drifting community only really seems to have a prescence in auckland, so can you guys help me out please?

ive never tried drifting in an MR car, but ive heard thats its very very tricky...
apparently because of the weight being towards the rear of the car, this causes the rear to come all the way around if theres even a hint of too much speed...
im guessing all it would take is some very careful throttle modulation and a slightly lower entry speed until you've got the hang of the entire process.
good luck dude. :)

I was looking for a hachiroku hardcore for ages, but they're so rare in New Zealand- a decent ones worth almost twice what I paid for my MR2!
So whats the deal with Australian car imports? I hear you have to have a cert to bring in a car or something- in NZ you can just import any banger you want, no tarriffs, no tax!

the 86 was sold through Toyota in Australia between 1983 - 1985, so its a factory delivered model, not a grey import...
and yeah, compliancing rules are different in Australia. we've got to have the car modified to meet Australian standards before the car is able to be registered. (much like the U.S. i beleive...)
this tends to bring the price of the cars up & some models can not be brought in at all...
i wish we had some of the cars that you guys get... (like the AE-111 Truenos/Levins, EVO VII Lancers, etc)
-just like all the guys here in the states who wish they get the cars that we get as well!! :D

Heh, yeah i was thinking of a Trueno, i know your one is in aust because i saw them in the trading post. there was over priced though... i don't wanna pay $7000 for a car made in 83. i only have $5000 to spend on a car. know what a Mits Magna TP Elante 89 is like?

who told you $7000??? they go for anywhere between $1500 - $6000 depending on condition...
MAGNA?!?!? i thought you wanted a performance car!!! :p

Heh i do want a performance car, just that i cannot ignore a free car.. and the cheepest i've seen the aust ae-86 for is $6000 and it was yellow do it looked ugly (all the cool ppl drive black cars). i want someting that performs well that i can drift in. so i might look at the '85 300zx or a cheep little corolla '85 twincam 16 to do up (make it a little ricy). are these anygood? (i think i'm startin to get off the drifting convo...)

I have seen intial D. and a Trueno would be a nice little car just that they are illegal to be imported here. i just gota get something easy to drive, not problematic and something i can learn to drift in. gota get a good car for under $5000... any sugestions?

this is off my web page.
Kansei Drift- this is performed at race speeds, when entering a high speed corner a driver lifts his foot off the throttle to induce a mild over steer and then balances the drift through steering and throttle motions. (note the car that is being used for this style of drift should be a neutral balanced car therefore the over steer will induce itself, if the car plows through any turn this technique will not work)
Braking drift- this is performed by trail braking into a corner, then loss of grip is obtained and then balance through steering and throttle motions. (note this is mainly for medium to low speed corners)
Faint Drift- this is performed by rocking the car towards the outside of a turn and then using the rebound of grip to throw the car into the normal cornering direction. (note this is heavy rally racing technique used to change vehicle attitudes during cornering, mainly tight mountain corners)
Clutch Kick- this is performed by depressing the clutch pedal on approach or during a mild drift, then pop the clutch to give a sudden jolt through the driveline to upset rear traction.
Shift Lock- this is performed by letting the revs drop on downshift into a corner and then releasing the clutch to put stress on the driveline to slow the rear tires inducing over steer. (this is like pulling the E-brake through a turn - note this should be performed in the wet to minimize damage to the driveline etc)
E-Brake Drift- this technique is very basic, pull the E-Brake or (side brake) to induce rear traction loss and balance drift through steering and throttle play. (note this can also be used to correct errors or fine tune drift angles)
Dirt Drop Drift- this is performed by dropping the rear tires off the road into the dirt to maintain or gain drift angle without losing power or speed and to set up for the next turn. (note this technique is very useful for low horsepower cars)
Jump Drift- in this technique the rear tire on the inside of a turn or apex is bounced over a curb to lose traction resulting in over steer.
Long Slide Drift- this is done by pulling the E-brake through a strait to start a high angel drift and to hold this to set up for the turn ahead. (note this can only be done at high speed)
Swaying Drift- this is a slow side-to-side faint like drift where the rear end sways back and forth down a strait.
FF Drift- or front wheel drive drift. The E-brake as well as steering and braking techniques must be used to balance the car through a corner. (note the E-brake is the main technique used to balance the drift) aka the "assdrag"
Power Over- this performed when entering a corner and using full throttle to produce heavy oversteer (tail slide) through the turn. (note need horsepower to make this happen)

all you guys who are suggesting front-wheel drive cars...
all i can say is this:
GO FOR IT!!!!
nothing drifts like a FWD!!!
if youve seen Initial D, then you can see how its done... watch the show a few more times, find your nearest canyon road & go crazy!!!!
and if you dont know if your car is front-wheel-drive or not, it doesnt matter.... just pump up your tyres with HEAPS of pressure in the back & youll be drifting around all over the place like theres no tomorrow...
so what are you waiting for?!?!?? get out there now & do some drift!!!!

im new to drifting so yeh...heres my question: is it possible to drift with a RWD automatic car? if so, how?

FWD can not drift. To pull a true drift you need a RWD or a high HP 4WD. But a front wheel canot string a series of curves together l,ike a RWD. Hence it isn;t truly drifting.

drifting is better in a front-wheel drive....

but just do what i do & tell all the guys with Civics, Integras, Accords & **insert whatever FWD car here** that im still saving for a crazy FWD drift machine, so in the meantime i drive the Corolla... :D
I wish i drove a Honda...
