View Full Version : oversteer sensation

hey guys, i recently took one of my routine drives through the mountains after it had rained.

i knew the roads were going to be slippery so i took the turns slower than usual, but that didn't seem to do very much seeing as how i oversteered

the thing is though, when the oversteer occurred, my steering became very light, so i thought that i was understeering, and decided to slow down and steer harder, only to realize i was oversteering, and headed towards the ditch on the inside of the turn, so i countersteered. then i was headed towards the ditch on the outside
i countersteered again, and at that point, i arrived at my "fuck it" mentality and just slammed on the brakes. that worked out quite well and i didn't hit anything, and yes i know the weight shift of braking could have worsened the oversteer, but like i said, i wasnt going that fast.

now my question is (for those who drift or oversteer with cars that don't have power steering), when i oversteer, is my steering supposed to get light? because it felt a lot like when i understeer

thanks for any input/comments on my stupidity

that happened when i oversteered in the rain. the steering was light and as i countersteered went from side to side really quickly.. it was fun.. my sister was screamin.. i was laughin.. but i didnt hit the brakes i just countersteered and got out of it

the only explanation i can think of is that the front tyres were actually slipping on the wet road, but pulling it in harder slipped out both the front and the back tyres... once the back end is out, the front tyres will continue doing their normal job & youll have to correct the oversteer.

four-wheel-drift anyone??? :D

hmm... you know that counter-steer in drifting is kind of different right?

When your steering is light, it means your front wheels are lossing traction.

yes i'm just saying WHEN i oversteered my steering wheel was light, so it was easy to countersteer, and wondered if anyone else had felt this before as well
