Cutting your shifter in no way helps as much as an actual short shifter kit, and dont let anyone tell ya different if they do it to thire own cars. BUT! it does help some, and hella lot in my case.

As you know a 1992 celica and such has pretty much no aftermarket, and i couldent for the life of me find a short throw shifter.... so I got mad and cut the SOB. I also had a Sparco Carbon Fiber shift knob... and it just didnt look right so damn high up.

(THIS WILL ONLY WORK FOR KNOBS THAT DONT NEED A THREAD ON THE SHIFT ARM)

step:

1- take off factory knob (you will never be able to use it)

2- take off boot by de-cliping the shifter trim at the base of the ashtray area and the tray infront of the e-brake.

3- push a hole trough a plastic bag with the shift arm, through its center, (to catch the metal shavings etc)

4- cut a vertical slash through the metal boot ring on the shifter arm, till you get down to the arm itself

5- place a strong screw driver in the rings cut, and pry the ring open with a hammer by hitting the screw driver as it opens the ring further.

6- slide the cut ring up and off of the shift arm

7- make a calculation of how low you wanna go, as low as you can is good, (note the bend in the bottom of the shift arm, and that you DO NOT CUT THE ARM AS LOW AS YOU WANT IN THE SENCE!!!.... the arm must reach the top of the internal part of the knob!!.. so what you do is measure how low you want, and then do a revers calculation from the top of the arm.. and cut it from the top down... not the base of the shift knob.
8- take off plastic bag, clean up with damp cloth by dabing at loose metal.
9- replace shifter boot
10- put on aftermarket knob, and tighten.

YAY!!!......... its done.. and YES..... you will notice a difference.... Sill wont be as good as a real SHIFT KIT! but it helps a bit, alot for me because I had an insaine throw.

Actually, TRD has a speed shifter for the Celica..but it is almost $220..I was interested in cutting my shifter, too, but changed my mind since I like the height of it right now. Perfect for resting my arm on the "armrest" and still being able to shift...for those days when I am REALLY LAZY...I noticed you also put a new exhaust on your car....I got one, too, and no resonator...it sounds sweet, and as far as 0-60...it is actually a tad bit slower...but acceleration over 100 is up..and that's what I really wanted...I don't do 1/4 mile races...only freeway races.

It wasnt till just a month ago that I found the short shifter from TRD myself...... ohh well..... to late...

and I already have a full exhaust on my car.... and damn doing the exhaust on our cars sounds sweeet.. I also took out the resonator... gotta love the sound now hu?

If you ever have a problem with your shift nob getting loose you can use lock tight or a thread locker on the screws. This hella helps.

well you guys already know trd makes a short shifter kit. i'm not sure if it's the same as the alltrac tho.

i know a few of us 90-91 alltrac owners went looking for 92-93 shifters cuz they are shorter. just to know you already have a pretty good one. since the non-alltrac shifters fit in alltracs.. it should work the other way around.

c's makes a shifter kit but it's about 300 usd.

you can make your own short shifter..
