With no common answer....
I would say start smaller and cheap... ninja 250, ninja 500, or up to fz600, cbr f/f2/ maybe f3, fzr600, yzf 600.
Most guys dont want to get such old or ugly bikes, they want newest and coolest. To be honest those kind of riders dont usually last long, from what I have seen.
But you can start on anything really, its all in YOUR ability and respect for bike safety as well as your ability and skill.
Go to the several dalerships around the Bay Area. Try some used bike places:fremont Cycle Salvage and Riders Choice (even better).
Look at classifieds2000.com, yahoo classifieds, cycle trader magazine.
Most importantly save some cash for good gear:helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, pants.
Regardless of age take the MSF course.

thanx for the info. right now i'm not exactly lookin' for the "newest & coolest" bikes, i just want a decent bike to learn the basic skills and what not. cause i'm not getting on a new ducati or somethin not knowing what exactly to do in certain situations. cant really afford a new bike anyway cause i'm turning 19 soon and workin full time and payin for my car insurance.
oh and that MSF test, i'm guessing its some kind of safety or driving test thing right? (sorry like i said i'm a newbie to the bike world). well thanx again, maybe i'll just stick to cars, lol, peace

i would suggest an F3. when i first started i had a 89ninja 600r was an ok bike but not very stable in turns. then i went to a 87 gsx-r 750 cool bike but once again not suitable for the type of riding i was doing! then i got my F3 the bike was the shit. great power, turned great, ect. it was the bike i learned to drag knee on! so stable i could drag knee in a circle at about 15-20 mph. it has a comfortable seating position but with a race bike look. well anyways good luck with your choice and watch out for assholes in cars that don't ever see us!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and no matter which bike you choose there is always potential of crashing nowadays bike in general are really good. and another thing don't get a F2 the F3 is so much better and not much more and i'm sure you feel way more comfortable on the F3.

New to riding? Well, don't settel for anything less than a Hayabusa! :p :p :p
Scourge:(
PS. I was just kidding. I would think that most any bike 600 and smaller would make a great starter bike. The Katana (noth 600 and 750) are two great examples and can be found on the cheap.

Im pretty sure you dont realize that the YZF600's and the YZF600 R6/R1's are two COMPLETELY different set of bikes, thats why you "can't believe I just recommended it".
The yzf600's are the large dual seat, and single light sport standard models. While as most people know the, yzf600 R1 and R6's are the cutting edge sportbikes.
Its a simple mistake to get them confused.

Oddly enough we can no longer edit threads or responses after 60 minutes. But since I cannot edit my above post, I will have to add another. My above response was to a post made a few days ago about the misconception that I was recomending a certain bike. I DID NOT recomend a yzf r1 or r6 as a beginners bikes, as Austin had thought. I was indicating the yzf600 lineup, and obviously responded to clarify the misconception. Howeve apparently some one has moderated on this thread and removed his response. Therefore, I do not want my above post to be misconstrued as some odd random attack on Austin.
Thanks.

Just a question from a non-biker....Its my understanding that the R1 is a 1000cc sport bike, not a 600cc, and the R6 is in fact a 600cc bike....and of course, the YZF 600R is a 600cc fantastic all around bike....Can anyone verify this so i can be more knowlegable????
And the R1 is simply called a "YZF R1", and likewise with the "YZF R6".....so it excludes the "600" after the "YZF"....Thats just what i thought

You got it right..... there is also a yzf1000, called the thunderace in Europe. But in the states its just called the yzf1000. There is also a yzf750, but that stopped production a few years ago. Although there is a r7, that is a limited production bike and is around $30,000.
right on....In a few short months, i'll be joining you fellas on this forum....YZF600 coming my way soon, if all goes as planned!....late

first two words: SAFETY COURSE. take that first, because they will teach you many things that you won't be able to learn on your own. next, start no higher than 600. if you go the yamaha route, the yzf600 is what you want to go with. i had one as a get-around-town bike, and it is comfortable as hell (not to mention it can still be tossed around). as far as an r6 goes, buyin one is just like buyin a 750. thats my next piece, due to them handling beautifully, and mad power for a 600cc. for a first bike, dont even let R1 pass through your mind. a crazy experience, and way too much for just street use (and no im not talking about racing in a straight line at a drag strip). most say satrt on the ninja ex500, but i say you have the right choice in a 600, just be responsible. peace. -sac racer
if your a speed freak and can actually ride. Take a nice Gixxer 600 and do a swap!!! Drop that 1100 or Busa engine in there...extend the swing arm a skosh and hold on for dear life!!!!
Mmmmm....engine swap.
