http://www3.sympatico.ca/dean.anderson4/NewRims12.jpg A friend of mine salvaged some celica supra wheels from a junk yard and restored them. They look pretty good on his 86. You really can't go wrong spending $20 on a rim.

HybridSquirrel
10-18-2004, 10:26 PM
those rims spiderman posted would be good....except it said not for road use...but those 14 in enkeis could be for road use...i think

Spiderman

hello im a newbie drifter and i read somewhere that 17 inch rims are to big to be drifting with is this the truth?

First of all you need to learn what a lug pattern is.
Those Enkei's would not fit on your car ever.

Then you need to learn how offsets work.
so you don't buy the wrong wheel.

Then you need to learn about rotational mass, and how it works.

After that you should be ready to buy a set of wheels.

Then there is tires, OH MY A WHOLE NEW CAN OF WORMS. :doh5:

I know a guy who drifts a Sil-80 with 17" rims and 225's on, as long as you can find 17" rims that are narrow enough to run 205's (195's if you can find them), you'll be fine

what, you'd rather drift with some 185's with giant sidewalls?

205's don't have a terribly big contact patch, especially if you get something cheap and all-season

17" wheels on a ae86 is very driftable.

it is not the mainstream of choice, however, with a decent amount of power you'd be able to turn those wheels. i think that large wheels look very good on the corolla. it is common in japan to run 17x8/9/10 on the ae86. of course a moderate fender flare is required. it is also common practice to use a very stretched tire for additional fender clearance and to lessen the contact patch on such a wide wheel (for drifters). the one downside of running so much meat in the rear is that you cannot adjust camber. this can be compensated with rubber compounds, or quality of tire. it will not be required to run a sticky tire in the rear unless you are an extreemely tallented drifter.

much of the ae86's initiation technique is driven by speed. with the speed, very small sidewall, and adaquate power (180+) you could turn 17" wheels without a problem. as far as power over goes... when using this technique to keep a slide going it will work well. however starting from a stop will naturally take a bit longer to get going because of the mass of the wheel.

if you chose a lightweight wheel (not talking about enkei mesh) but maybe a volk super light wheel, you may be able to get to a setup where you are equal to and less than most guys using 14" supras or 15" enkei mesh.

however be careful trying to use large wheels on a stock ae86. this may be astetically pleasing but will not make for a very peppy drift car.

Where the hell in Japan is it common to see 17x10 wheels on an ae86? It would be damn near impossible to even get them to fit. I think im gonna pull out my handy dandy :bsflag: flag

Yea to fit wheels like that you have to do some serious fender and quater panel work.

well i was talkin bout the size of rim in general but on a car like a 86 that would suck!

fliprayzin240sx
11-29-2004, 07:14 PM
Basically...depends on how much power you have. Bigger/wider wheels need more power to break loose and stay loose.

ta-kun
12-10-2004, 11:54 AM
more power... or more speed.

Raziel
12-12-2004, 12:00 PM
I think it could be a little bit of both. Depending on your car. The mor power the less speed you need. The less power the more speed you need.

to start off just go with something you are willing to wreck! get some junk yard rims and beat the hell out of them. when you start getting good at control and speed then get some nice wheels to show off you skill along with your car. experience is the key. just because you can turn into one corner and hammer the gas to break the back end out doesn't mean you can drift.

wow! 17s on a AE86 would be weird. 17s on a 240 would be more managable.
For drifting, I would focus more on how wide the rim is.
