View Full Version : Turbo cool down period??

I have had my Eclipse Rs turboed for about a month now and after driving the car i let it cool down for about a minute to a minute and a half. Is this enough time to not do any damage to the turbo? It's a T3/04e and i don't hit max boost often, the egt drops down to 600f when i sit at idle and stays there while the engine is on. I have a turbo timer but its not working right.

yeah that sounds good, im my own turbo timer too :) after a hard session driving let it cool a bit longer

TurboRs when i go too the store down the street. I usually let it cool down 1 minute. For long drives, i set my timer at 2:00 always good too let it idle a bit longer than a minute and a half.

I usually let it sit for 45 seconds to a minute for normal driving.. use synthetic oil and you should be fine with that :)

No doubt you need to use full synthetic oil, and every stop for gas, its gotta be 92 octane, and every 2 weeks, i usually drop in a octane booster in my fuel. I think it works better and doesnt give you that shit ass feelin when your car bogs on shit octane...

I'm glad you guys brought up octane. I'm new to the turbo realm of power and was wondering why octane is so important? There is a station near me that sells 97oct. Could i see power gains if I used half a tank of 92 and half of 97? I'm not even going to think about a full tank of 97 not @ 3.00 gallon!

hmmmm.....low octane is mixed up with other things such as "lead" (they dont want you too know that), and other harmful chemicals and solids, the higher the octane...the more it will combust inside your engine, creatin a bigger spark, which will turn into power....so....the higher the octane..the better the response and power, you wont be able too feel the difference power wise, but if you do use low octane....95 and lower I guarantee, your car will be boggin and backfirin..thats a fact..
I dont recommend usin mixed up types of octane...but if you are, then thats you bud....
I just get 92 and throw some octane booster every two weeks, thats what you should do....where I live, 92 is the most our stations go too......97 must be fuckin strong....
ohh yeah 92+octane boost will put you over 100+ octane ratin.....good for racing :)

Actually, octane boosters you find at the parts stores and such, don't do much to help, either to your car or your wallet. :)
The increase of actual motor octane, which is the measurement of octane that's relevent to your engine, is about .1 to .3 points. Notice that it's .1 not 1. :) They like to lead you to believe that that stuff in the bottle will magically increase you octane to 100 octane.
Usually turbo cars, and other high compression vehicles, demand high octane fuels, especially under high boost/load conditions.
I'd reccomend mixing in some 100 unleaded octane fuel with your pump gas. That'll usually bring it up to 97 or octane, depending on mixture. Actually, 1 gal of 100 to 1 gal of 92 pump gas equals to about 96 octane. You can do the math from there.
Another trick that some turbo guys have been using is mixing in Toulene or Xyzlene with pump gas to bring it to a true 100 motor octane fuel. The benefit is the cost. 5 gallons of Toulene is about $25.00 which will turn into 25 gallons of "homeade" 100 octane. Considering 100 octane is about $5.50 a gallon here, it's quite a bargain. :)

yeah octane boosters dont do much at all
100 unleaded? how about 114 leaded? oh wait.. heheh mixing gas wont do anything other than your car wanting you to up the boost.
I heard there was a huge scandal regarding toulene and people were selling it as race gas.. in australia or something like that..
in short, race gas = more timing = more boost = more fun :)

Yeah, the only reason I didn't mention the leaded fuels, was because some of the guys here might run catalytic converters or don't want to change their O2 sensor that often ;)
Personally I run VP C16, which is about 116-117 motor octane.
Toulene has another plus, the fact that it keeps the fuel system clean and doesn't harm above mentioned parts.

Toulene is available at Paint Supply Stores and Hardware stores in 5 gallon cans usually.
Don't exceed a 33% mixture of Xylene to gas, and you can use this formula to calculate your octane:
[(octane pump gas)x(gallons pump gas)+
(octane xylene)x(gallons xylene)]
/total gallons of mix

I don't know about lower octane gasoline being leaded at all. Why would they do that? I'd like to know where you got this information. I doubt that lower octane gas would have harmful chemicals that higher octane doesn't have.

Not true. Octane ratings were created as a way of signifying the gasolines resistance to knock. Higher octane ratings take a longer time to burn, but that does not mean you'll get more power just by using higher octane. If you have advanced timing, high compression pistons, large amount of boost, the need for higher octane is there, simply because the auto-ignition that will result from a lower octane gas being burned to quickly and unevenly causes detonation. Octane is not a power adder, its more like a engine saver. If your car can run with 87 octane, and it doesn't knock, ping, detonate, etc., then you have no problem. There's absolutely no reason to get higher octane. It's a waste of money. You're car will not bog or backfire because you use something lower than 95 octane. Again, if the car isn't having problems with a lower octane gasoline, then you have no problems.

You can mix different types of octane, it will not harm the engine. You shouldn't have an empty tank, and put in half 89 and half 92, because the fuel won't necessarily mix. You should probably mix when you're tank is around half full/empty, whatever you want to call it.
Again, no reason to get octane booster. Waste of money. You do not get added power, unless of course you advance your timing or increase the air pressure of the compressor specifically so you can take advantage of using a higher octane fuel.
Using higher octane doesn't mean its good for racing. Its just a rating that tells you how well the unburnt fuel resists auto-ignition/knock.

Well Rage, thats my experience with shit ass 87 fuel, my civicturbo starts boggin and i know theres not a lot of pull, when i throw in 92 and octane booster, i Do feel a increase in pull and it doesnt bogg anymore..i dont know about you but I never mix gasoline...I just heard that it doesnt mix right.
About that lead, they do throw a little lead in there belive it or not, a small amount but its there non the less....
let me know if anyof this is untrue for you though..later all

If you feel bogging because of a lower octane fuel, then its all in your mind. Octane is not a rating of how good gasoline is. Octane is a rating to specify its resistance to knock. That is all. If you're putting in octane booster, it will not help the engine. The only reason to use higher octane fuel is to prevent knock/detonation; not to add power. It makes no sense that a higher octane fuel rating would mean that the gasoline somehow adds more power to the vehicle.
I don't mix gasoline either, but it is not wrong/incorrect to do it. The only problem that would arise is if your car needs a higher octane fuel, and you put in half a tank of 87 followed by half a tank of 92. Then, because of possible density differences and lack of mixing, the car would consume the 87 octane, which would lead to knocking. Wouldn't mixing gasolines be like putting in octane booster anyway?
I don't think that a gasoline labeled "unleaded" would have lead in it, but even if it did, there is absolutely know reason why a lower octane fuel would have "a little bit of lead" and a higher octane fuel wouldn't. Lead isn't thrown in by the way, its taken out.

Your T3/T4 have oil & coolant, or just oil? My T3 has both and I've been told that the coolant keeps the turbo temps down enough so that you should need to let it sit for longer than :30 to a minute.
Higher octane has a higher combustion point, which means you can either run a higher compression engine or more boost without the gas combusting in the cylinder before the spark ignites it(detonation/pinging/knocking).

Octane is the resistance to detonation.
You guys need to find Tom3's thread on octane, it will explain so much about octane you will be sick of hearing about it by the time your finished.
I would recommend that you red it before you fill your car up again or do any mods if you don't understand octane

Back to turbo timers.....I have a general idea of what they do but what EXACTLY do they do? And do I need it for my 99 Eclipse GSX?

allow a cool off period so no oil gets dried and stuck in your turbo.. oil dried up or coked in the turbo will cause damage.. its always a good idea to give a nice idle cool off time after running your turbo car hard or even for long stretches.. its one of the first mods I would recommend..
