write to your congressman and have them enforce this law!! (although bringing attention to it will probably just make them change the law)

apparently, there is a ban on vehicles with a GVWR > 6000lbs on many streets in CA, including all residential streets (with exceptions). this includes, hummers, land cruisers, X5's, escalades, tahoes, expedition, cayennes, etc... that's awesome... it's dangerous for us small car drivers trying to dodge those trucks/suv's that weigh 2-3 times more than my car :P

As much as I don't like some SUV's (and 99% of SUV drivers), there is NO way I would EVER support this idea. The last thing I want is the gov't telling me that I can't tow my race car with my Durango to my house because "it might be too heavy".
You don't like SUV's? Don't drive next to them. We're not talking rocket science here.

gross vehicle weigh is the weight of the vehicle fully loaded. Notice how he compared the fully loaded vehicle weight of a hummer to the dry weight (completely lacking any load, fluids, etc) of a Honda Accord. The whole article is slanted towards Anti-SUV. Of course the gross vehicle weight of a hummer is high, its made to carry a load! My Yukon weighs 4600lbs, your average 4door sedan weighs about 3500lbs.
The ban refers to cargo vehicles, and vehicles with trailers. If the guy writing the article would have actually LOOKED THE DAMN LAW UP instead of commenting on signs he saw, he would have known that.
It's usually older people in cars that cause me grief. I don't believe that people should be barred from driving any non-commercial vehicle that they choose, but I do believe that there should be an age cap on driving.

Might as well ban semi's, you dolt.
If you're talking about the article author, he probably would. Prius for all :partyhat:

no age cap, but get a retested at certain ages to see if you can still drive correctly.

as much as a hate SUVs, i agree with byron... what right does the government have to dictate what car you can and cant drive... thats just like those fucking community associations telling you you can and cant do this and that to the house you worked your ass off your whole life to buy.
and i think the US should follow Germany's drivers license policy.
no age cap, but get a retested at certain ages to see if you can still drive correctly.
They do this... Anyone can pass a 20 minute test, but being fully aware of whats going on every time you get behind the wheel is something entirely different.

Yeah, as much as I disapprove of tank driving soccer moms, that's just ridiculous... besides, my cars are heavy enough to roll with most SUV's around anyway... Hell, my 7 Series would rox0r an Explorer.
"Heavy in the street like a 7-series bimmer". :werd:

wow, maybe i should have used more smilies to indicate it was a "tongue in cheek" post... i thought my last line and the funny pic would've done that.
it's obvious that the intent of the law is not directed at super huge family driven suv's, but it IS funny that the law does not differentiate as such. it just states that vehicles with a GVWR > 6000 lbs are not allowed on certain streets, nothing about it having to be a commercial or cargo vehicle (not that i could find in the CVC, anyway).
Florida has enacted a new Class D license program for these larger SUVs.
They're getting these people based on width of the vehicle. (for instance the Hummer H2 SUT is 81.5 inches wide)
CLASS D: Any truck or truck tractor that has an actual weight, declared weight or GVWR of 8,000 LBS or more but less than than 26,001 LBS. or is more than 80 inches wide.
A resident who holds a valid Florida chauffeur license may continue to operate vehicles for which a CLASS D driver license is required until the chauffeur license expires. This includes farmers and emergency vehicle operators who are exempt.
I'm not sure how they're going to go about enforcing it though; maybe through dealership sales?

Now that Class D shit is funny.

That might work. The people that need SUV's can get the liscense, the people that dont probably wont bother.

Well i dont think that people should tell you what you can drive its simply bs.... So if we can drive SUV's what happens when your lil car breaks down? no one can tow it? Nothing is going to stop me from driving my tahoe
I'm all for having SUV's require a different class of license. That would be an awesome compromise. We get a lot of yuppies who shouldn't be driving SUV's off the road, and the lawmakers get to make a whole bunch of new laws. Everyone is happy.

I'd rather make mirror requirements for SUVs a law than banning them because of weight (although I do see some logic in the law). It doesn't bother me as much as I'd rather see a ban on extremely loud exhausts (ie motorcycles)...they are really annoying at 3am with 20 of them go down the street, even a 1/4 mile away my windows still rattle.
