The problem with a lot of digital cameras is shutter lag. You press the button, and it takes its own sweet time actually taking the picture.

If you have the cash, the Canon Digital Rebel is very, very good for what you pay for it. Right now Costco has the D-Rebel kit with 18-55 lens (IIRC - the focal length may be different but that seems right) and a spare battery (which is $70+ at retail) for $945. It will take all Canon EF-series lenses, and any flash that will work with an EOS camera.

If you don't have that kind of money to spend, search for an Olympus C-2500L on ebay. Although it's an older camera, it was a very high-end prosumer model when it came out. Only 2.5mpixel, but the quality of the optics means that it takes better pictures than many newer, "higher resolution" cameras. It's also got negligible shutter lag, and a lot of different modes from point-and-shoot to almost as much manual control as a good 35mm SLR.

don't buy anything thats not a Nikon, Minolta, Canon, or Olympus, they're the only brands that know how to make the Optics properly.

If you dont have the money for an EOS Rebel like PNG said also take a look on ebay for a Nikon Coolpix 990. It only has 3.5mp but image quality is exceptionally better than most 5mp camera todays and it has a very low shutter lag. (not to mention a 70 pics in a second option)

For a Digital SLR, I would go with the Nikon D70. It is about 300 more than a Rebel, but the quality is unmatched IMO. IF you're just looking for a good point and shoot, you cant get better than the Canon A80.

If you don't go with PNG's recommendation, look at the Canon Powershot S500. 5.0 megapixels and costs around $450 last I checked. I have it and I love it. (It's not the one I took to D1, I just bought this one)

I'd go with the Canon Powershot G5 over the s500. The G5 has better optical zoom and better lens choices compared to the s500, but it only costs ~$50 more.

And Personally, I dislike the EOS Digital Rebel. My friend's sister had one and we took it out one night downtown to take some shots and it was just too much work to use for someone who isnt a professional photographer. Plus, you cant use the LCD screen to shoot, you have to use the viewfinder which makes some angle's/heights hard to shoot from.

If you're just looking for a good camera to take around and be able to point and shoot and get good pics while still having a little bit of manual control over the ISO and etc., I would HIGHLY reccomend the Canon Powershot a80. Best Buy has them for $299 now, and you can get them as low as $229 if you look. 4.0 MP, good zoom, angled LCD screen, and enough manual options to allow you to screw around with and customize your picture, yet still easy enough to put on a mode and shoot away and still get good pictures turned out.
