Tonight at the strip was SWEET. A guy down there had a new AMG Mercedes Sport Utility that was running 9.97 in the 8th which is pretty damn respectable for a Sport UTE but the rich bastard also brought along his 2001 911 Turbo. The first run he ran a cobra about a 97 and the 911 went 8.22@91(the strip is only the 8th mile) completly stock. All 4 wheels getting made grip coming off the line and it stomped that cobras ass. The next run was 8.75@86 but he spun the tires too much off the line that second time. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life. It doesn't get anybetter than some old rich fart dropping 135,000 for a new car then going and running the shit out of it. Now if I could get the guy in my home town to take his 360 Modena down to the strip we could see some kick ass action. Thats the kind of stuff you see on tv all the time, but to me thats what dreams are made of.

This was at an 1/8th mile drag just outside of Wilkesboro North Carolina. Lots of people and lots of fast cars. one thing I forgot to mention is that one of my best friends ran a 9.94 in his 99 GSR and all he's done to it is a muffler and AEM Cold Air Intake. Thats .06 faster that my friends turbo 89 Supra that just got rebuilt 11,000 miles ago but thats totally stock, still pretty damn fast.

when that guy with the 911 turbo shatters his ring and pinion gears, or burns the clutch... LAUGH YOUR ASS OFF!!!
those cars aren't built for drag racing, and he's in for a shocking $35,000 repair bill if he keeps it up. racing damage is NOT covered by the warranty.
then tell him to go buy a mustang
;)

Are you on Crack??? You think its going to cost him $35k to fix his tranny if he shatters his R&P? Granted, the car isn't made for drag-racing, but get a clue. You could buy a complete ready to install GT3RS tranny for $35k. Easily, I saw one for sale for less this weekend for less than that with spare gears.
Got to agree though, buy a mustang if you want to drag race, buy a Porsche to road race. Just don't buy the 996tt, you'll feel pretty stupid when you get your ass handed to you at the track by a GT3 Cup car that the owner paid less for new.

the transmission for an all wheel drive Porsche 996 twin turbo. those parts are NEW, so there's no discount. include the labor, and the cost of replacing the clutch (around $4500) the differential (around $12,000), and while they're at it, they'll do the halfshafts too (only $600)
remember, labor is around $85.00 an hour... and they haven't even released the factory manuals and tech info regarding drivetrain replacement for the 996TT ;)
the engine ALONE will cost you about $40,000 to replace, and from what i heard, the tranny is only a few bucks cheaper.
let's be conservative and say:
$25,000 if he's lucky.
offhand, a good friend of ours blew the engine on his Porsche 911 turbo. he spend $16,000 on the engine repairs. after all the other work was done to the powertrain, and the rest of the car, the final bill was $60,000. he said "ahh, what the hell, you only live once"
Tow that bitch a few miles down the road and call the dealer.
Dealer: "Sir were you drag racing your car?"
Rich Dude: "Of course not, I drive a Porsche, I wouldn't dare run my baby in such a barbaric way (I just bought it to get some young *****), now fix my $135k hooptie please".
That's how I got the dealership to replace my old Mustang's tranny after it nuked itself on the dragstrip a few years ago.
Me: "I don't know what happened sirs, I went to merge onto the freeway and it just wouldn't go into gear anymore".

How much does that 911 cost??? And he was running 8.what in the 1/8 mile??? I don't have all wheel drive but my load runs the 1/8 in freakin 7.4@96mph!!!! If I had the cash I still wouldn't buy no damn porsche that couldn't run balls out on the strip. I'd buy a Hennessey Venom Viper 650R and buy some slicks and hand everyone their ass with 10 second all motor timeslips....

Thats assuming you could keep that 650R running long enough to finish a 1/4 mile. Everyone I've seen has had a mechanic working on it. Last one had a mechanic under it all weekend, never made it on the track once. I have yet to see one last an entire weekend on the track. Those things are about as reliable as Yugo, faster yeah, but what good is speed if the damn thing won't run.

The car was running 8.22 at 90 or 91 in the 8th although thats not the fastest thing on the planet thats totally stock and he probably wasn't running it all that hard. Brain you car must be pretty bad ass to be running those kind of times because I know some guys that heve supras that dyno over 440 at the wheels and they only run low 7's.

Yeah it runs hard... I put out 440 at the wheels and run low 7's but I also put out 585 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels. I don't think those 440rwhp supra's are putting out that kind of torque. Torque is what moves the car not horsepower. But either way I'm just saying that yes a 911 is a kickass car but I can't see paying that kind of money when you could build something alot faster for alot less money.
Brian, I didn't know that the Hennessey viper's had that many problems. I've never seen one in real life running at the track and Car and Driver always makes the car seem like it's just get in and start her up and run 11's... I know real life can be alot different but the magazines are hyping the 650R up as a no-frills, megapower, supercar. They never talk about what it took to get it to make one quarter mile pass.... We're probably not getting the full story...

I still think the viper is cool but what car with like 800 hp ins't going to need to be worked on all the time. Yes some cars are better then others with that but no car car run 800hp and not need to be worked on a lot
