Sheriffs Academy or Police Academy...

Has anybody been to either? If so what's it like? Hows the testing for the written and the physical test? I just got a letter in from the Sheriffs department saying I can be tested on July 10th to get in. If you guys have any information that is helpful. Let me know asap. Thanks in advance.

You're confused. The Police Academy is what you're sent to after you apply and pass all the written, physical and oral testing. Once a police department decides that they want to hire you, they will put you through the Academy. Basically, in the testing, the department decides whether they want you to become a cop. The Academy teaches you how to be a cop.


Well I'll be joining the Sheriffs department then going in as a Deputy Sheriff for Contra Costa County. Like I said, I have to do a written test on the 10th of july and the physical test that day as well.

Any ideas on how I can drag a 165 ib dummy? I want to be prepared for this damn test. I want to pass it so I can get my career started.

Hey whats up... I have a POST. Was a Federal Law Enforcement for 11 years. First you take the written test, then you take the physical agility test. If you pass those tests, then you get a lie detector test, which will run a couple of hours. Depending on the agency, they will do a back ground check so many years. And interview the people you listed on your application as ref. If pass all that, then comes the academy. You still can wash out. You know CO CO Sheriffs, when they graduate go straight to the jail for a couple of years. Do you know that??? But as street cop, is hella stressful, some of the shit you see. Will surprise you... But Good Luck..

Thanks for the information, now as far as the written exam goes would the exam be the same for the Sheriff's deputy too? So I guess I'll start working in some penetentary right or state prison? That's fine with me. Well if you have or anybody has anymore info that can help me out that would be great, right now I'm reading Barrons- Police Officer Exam 6th Edition in order to get me prepared for the test.

It's a long process and there are a ton of people taking it also so don't get your hopes up too soon. :)

Put your arms under the dummy's arms and lock your wrists around its chest. Make sure the dummy is face up so its face isn't in your crotch.. Then start walking backwards.

Fireman's drag. Pick up an EMT booklet.

written test is basic civil service type stuff, a high school grad should be ok. the physical test is not too tuff, there is tons of help. from books to companies that will teach to pass hese tests. lapd has a group that meets on weekends to get you into shape for the physical part, i am sutre there will be something like that in your area. psych test can be tough. just don't lie.
