I work with Photoshop everyday, but lately it's been alot of commission work... Mostly porting Poser 5 figures into Cinema 4D or Maya and then rendering them out and making prints for people who want to buy them. (usually for their offices at work, etc.)

http://img58.photobucket.com/albums/v176/dreamsyndrome/ I put a few pieces that I'm working on currently (commisioned) in there that aren't quite finished but thats the sort of work that I've been doing lately, mostly posters for people to put in their office, etc.

If you get into Photoshop heavily I suggest investing in a Wacom tablet...

www.wacom.com (http://www.wacom.com)

I tried to look at your work however photobucket was giving me a SQL error :uhoh:

*edit*

I looked in your PB album and pretty cool stuff, not bad for a first time outing. A word to the wise, though, you may want to export your images as JPEG (File / Save As / then under the filename theres an option that says "FORMAT" , choose JPEG from there and set the quality to 100%) because BMPs take up alot of space.

Good luck :gamer:

Thanks, those were saved in 72 dpi and shrunk for Photobucket, I usually work with 300DPI and the images are around 6000 x 6000 pixels or greater... (DPI is basically image resolution, 72 is for web and 300+ is for print, don't worry all of this shit will come in time)

As for the Wacom, the Wacom is a tablet that allows you to use tools (at least with the intuos2 models) such as a pen or airbrush instead of a mouse when you do graphics... So basically it gives you more of a natural feel when doing images (just like drawing with a pen / paintbrush instead of a mouse) If you really enjoy using PS, it helps tremendously.

Yeah, the formats are a bitch when you're first starting out, but after awhile it becomes 2nd nature... Just remember that most graphics for the web should be ported to JPEG or GIF depending... but for the most part JPEG is superior.

Once again good luck. :salute:

Good start. Photoshop's strongest suit is for image manipulation. I definitely suggest importing some pictures and screwing around with cropping, color manipulation, and alterations via paths and brushing.

*constructive criticism: whereas it's no fault of yours- because its natural in everyone first learning photoshop (i definitely did it) i would suggest using the filters sparringly. Try utilizing them to compliment your images rather than making them the focal point. The verticle blast for instance on your second image.

To add onto what Ham was sayin, if you want a hard copy of your image, definitely make sure your starting resolution is at least 200dpi. 300 is generally standard (at least from what i've experienced). If you want to see why that's important, take a picture with writing and print an 8x10 at 72dpi and 300dpi. But if you're doing web based imaging, 72 is what you'll use.

Also, if you make larger files, like high quality 8x10, 11x17, or greater, jpg's are good, but .tiff using lzw compression is pretty much a loseless format and it saves space.

Heh, but this last crap is pretty much just if you plan on taking it seriously on a professional level. It really doesn't matter.

All i can say is, have fun, experience with everything, and if you have any questions, let us know.

Ike

If it's under 200K then upload it to photobucket ... I think you just aren't moving the right layer though to be honest with you

Carcrazy
05-24-2004, 03:22 PM

I have to agree with the milkman. Steer away from filters, especially lens flares and bevels! In the layer's pallete, there is a drop-down menu that toggles the "mode" of each layer. The layer modes are your best friends. I have PSDs laying around the internet somewhere. shoot me an email if you want to check them out.

i have alot of stuff, but that other stuff is all work related.. here's a few i've done in my spare time:

You know whats funny about that one? I did that one back in 99, and of all the images i've posted, that was the only one that i did without using any images at all. I'm not sure if i have the source for that one. But i do have the source for all the other ones :)

Ok i dont get this layer crap ???

So you make the initial layer which is background
then all the layers that are above that in the list show up on top of background right? i think im soing something wrong =\

ShadyMilkman
05-25-2004, 09:49 PM
exactly.

Carcrazy
05-25-2004, 10:09 PM
oh haha i messed with it and relized you had to make it white not black..sorry blonde moment...

edit - Alright the layer stuff works for like pencil, but when i make the intial background black and then make a new layer (which is white) and i put text on that layer and then try to fill it it does not fill.....i have to select the intial backgrounf layer and fill the text and then i can just delet the second layer....

S-type - the ships in the first pic looks rendered, do you work with any 3D progs?

Carcrazy - hold "ctrl" and then click on a layer to select it's contents, and then on another layer you can right click on the marquee selection and "fill selection"... that or it's in edit, I haven't fucked with that command for awhile and instead I just use the paintbucket to fill in the selection like a lazy ass.

I agree with the staying away from the filters as much as possible, use them to accentuate an image, not to overkill it.

blending modes = teh win.

I'll take that as a compliment - the ships were originally from a photo - i just cut out the shape and filled it with black.. and a bit of orange paint brush for the suns highlight :)

haha ok ill try that....does it work best on single layer? or multilayer?

Ike
05-26-2004, 03:21 PM
Well do this, make a new layer (shift + Ctrl + n) and then fill it with a color. Make sure this layer is over an image of some sort, download a picture of a car or something if you want to. Then fuck with the blending modes of the layer you put the fill in and see what happens...

Carcrazy
05-26-2004, 03:23 PM
ok thanks for the help

edit - haha cool that is teh win! i put a new pic on the site...it was a yellow gsxr600...i did a blue layer on top with one of the blends then i did "find edges"
