I'm currently working with a television producer who is very close to getting approval from the Speed Channel for a show called "Pinks". The concept is very simple - In each half-hour episode, we're introduced to two racers who have agreed to race best two out of three. The winner gets the loser's car.

My job is to round up participants and set the stage for the races. The reason I'm involved is because the producer believes (like I do) that in order for it to work, there can't be any bullshit involved, at least not from us. We're not going to "rig" it in any way; it will be up to the two racers to look over each other's cars, size up the competition, and negotiate whatever arrangement they want. If a guy with what looks like a bone-stock CRX gets paired up against a big-block Camaro, then the Honda guy better get himself a bunch of car lengths and the leave, or have something hidden up his sleeve. You get the idea - It's basically a money race under controlled conditions so that the only thing that gets hurt is the loser's wallet and pride.

The actual races will be filmed in conjunction with existing race events around the country. I'm still waiting for full details on that, but for the pilot episode package, we'll most likely be in the Los Angeles area. If the show gets picked up, we'll be going all over the US.

We don't need $50k cars for this, which is good because most people aren't willing to gamble that kind of money. But I know that there are more than a few of you on SRO who have $3000 cars that are much faster than they should be, and experience negotiating money races. Here's your chance to get some recognition for your mad skilz, as it were.

If you're interested, send me an email at phuizenga@promediapub.com with your contact information and we'll go from there. If you have a question about the show that you don't mind asking in public, please post it here so that I don't end up answering the same thing over and over via email. Of course, if you want to quiz me on the DL, then by all means do so.

It's no crazier than putting a couple thou on "red" at the roulette wheel, and unlike Vegas, the odds are determined by how good of a sandbagger you are. That's gonna be the fun part - watching the two guys try to figure each other out, and sell a losing proposition to each other.

I'm thinking that some people and/or shops will build cars specifically for the show, once it gets popular.

For the safety of all involved, it's gonna be drag racing at regular quarter-mile tracks. But if, say you have a GSX and you can talk someone into running you 1/8th mile on street tires, then that's what it will be. Lights on or flagged will also be up to the drivers to work out.

Will you allow running from a roll under controlled environments? I got a friend with a 400whp taurus and a bitchin torque curve that would be all over this.

Edit: Never mind. Maybe I should read first.

This format will appeal to every level of motorsports.
Can uou imagine the $1,500 VW guy going home with the $150,000 collectable anything , or the $150,000 guy going home with his prize ?
Don't even think about a girl winning, who would watch that ? JK
Remember ya gotta go 3 rounds and win 2.
This is like "SURVIVOR" for car people.

you could write the contract so that each competitor's car is an "entry fee" for the contest and that the "first prize" is the two cars. That way it wouldn't be betting, it would just require the producer to be responsible for the cars during the contest.

a few things came to mind reading this...how are you gonna go about getting the people for the races? i mean you cant set it up before hand cuz then the 2 racers involved would already know whats the other one has and if you do it on the spot what if one person chickens out. this sounds like a great idea tho i wanna see some unsuspecting ****y person get his/her ass handed to them

I am sure they will be plenty of people willing to race.
yeah it would suck to loose your car, but it is a lot safer on a track and you don't have to worry about going to jail if you get busted.
Something like a 80 corolla with a beast of motor vs. anythng would be a good race.
There is a lot of sleepers out there, and there is a lot of fools out there.
Put the 2 together and you have a great show.

I just got off the phone with the producers. The pilot episodes have been approved for production, and the first two will be shot at Irwindale Dragstrip here in the Los Angeles area.

We need 4 cars, pronto. Ever wish you'd been on Monster Garage or Junkyard Wars? Well, this is your chance to be a part of something that's potentially as big from the very beginning. Once the pilots air and this gets nationwide attention, it's going to be a hell of a lot more difficult to make the cut for the show, so don't miss out. Bring on your beaters and let's race.

any rules? tryouts?

The rules are:

Your car has to be safe enough to pass tech at the track. This isn't negotiable, but considering that the cars we're likely to get for the first go-around aren't gonna exactly be 25.1D-fast, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You have to actually own the car you're racing. This should be obvious from the concept of the show, but I'm sure that there are people out there who would try to race a car that actually belonged to Wells Fargo or GMAC if we didn't spell it out. Bring the title, since you might be signing it over.

Be prepared to take the other guy's car home if you win, and have a plan to get your ass home if you don't.

I'm going to shoot for having a total of six cars and drivers lined up. If everybody shows, then we'll shoot three episodes back-to-back, but it's really just to ensure we get two good races even if somebody flakes or has a problem that can't be solved. If I get fortunate enough to have a large variety of potential contestants to choose from, I may end up pre-screening, or I might just invite everybody down and pick out the cars on the spot. Personality counts, since this is mostly about the drivers rather than the races themselves.

No bikes, unless we get two and can do bike-vs-bike, since we can't race mixed pairs. To quote the producer, "we can be ready in two weeks", but realistically it will have to wait until I get 6 non-flakey racers lined up. Once that happens, it will be the first Thursday night I can get everyone committed to show up at Irwindale.

Find me some decent racers, and I'll let you run my Fiero - you'll just have to be one hell of a talker. "It had 95 HP at the crank when it was NEW, and it's an automatic! You have to give me the leave, and let me line up at the 330' mark..." :P

An update:

The contract is signed, and the series is happening. The target date is October 5th, and the location will be LACR in Lancaster, CA. They want to spend August and September casting this thing. Ideally, we'll get enough interest to come up with a list of 50 people, from which 10 will get an invitation to race on 10/5. From that day of shooting, we'll get the pilot episodes, and if Speed Channel picks up the series, the remaining people who didn't race will be at the top of the list for the rest of the full season.

Send me an email at phuizenga@overrevmag.com and I'll get your name into the casting pool.

Got a call from Pinks host Rich Christensen today: Seeing how there are guys willing to trailer race cars from back east, my ultra low budget/sleeper cars won't be filling what they want to shoot currently. For at least the first few episodes, they're looking for cars valued between $8000 - $15,000.

I assumed each 1/2 hour episode would include stuff from several pairs of racers. Turns out each episode will feature just one pair of racers so they need to come up with 22 1/2 minutes of content per 1/2 hour episode.

They plan to have episodes for cars valued between $3000 - $8000 sometime in the future, so maybe I can scratch something together for when that happens. Makes sense after all: Why would a guy want to race against a car he doesn't even want in the first place?

No ghetto categories apparently at this point.

Interesting... That's news to me. I guess I better give Rich and Steve a call and make sure they aren't shooting themselves in the foot here. I have a feeling that limiting the pool of potential racers is not such a good idea, especially since they can match up cars of similar value easily enough.

When I said baiting high dollar owners with ghetto sleepers is not uncommon in real street racing, he paused. That's when he said he may have a group of racers in the $3000 - $8000 category in the future and can I come up with a car that has a "value" within that range. My whole fleet doesn't add up to $3000!

That's what really needs to be done, match up some high dollar spoonfed against a sleeper with several thousand in cash. Maybe it's just me, but I would get a way bigger laugh watching some pompous jackass lose his Lambo or thousands of dollars to some unassuming regular Joe with his sleeper.

The cash has to also be handled by the producer/host. I don't want to deal with facing heat and/or a threatening demand for a rematch from some incompetent sore loser. "Sorry you lost, dude. Later."

" A true life adventure" "PIMP MY RIDE WITH A 499 SHOT"
The season ending "ALL STAR" show would be a blast.

Relax, they willl learn what works.
The trailered in entries are not posers.
The show will evolve into all forms of motor competition as it develops.

Trash talk can be worth a $million, but you gotta back it up with a win, ACTUALLY 2 WINS.

The "value" of a car is ambiguous at best. How much money a DIYer has in their car could be a fraction of what another guy would pay to have other people do all the work because they could save a bunch of money. Same thing for scoring parts at swap meets or wrecking yards.

i offered two bikes, but nothing that would be valuable enough for what they are looking for currently.

Same with me, I offered two cars (buckets really). I wasn't going to put up something I value until I see how this actually worked out, Did you fill out the apps and send them in with pics too?

no, i initially clled steph. when this first came up. we talked for about 20 minutes he seemed cool. i explained what i had planned and he seemed interested. when it died down i just asumed it got put on the back burner. when png brought this thing back into play i was just too lazy and then the stories started comming about what they were looking for now. my vehicles don't the requirements so why bother.

At least you stepped up to the plate and then got turned down. I filled out the apps and sent them in with the pics anyway, even though I got turned down.

Rich called me again yesterday and told me a lot of guys were interested until they were put on the spot. He said he couldn't even come up with a single pair of car racers regardless of value in socal (he might have said the whole state, I can't remember which).

He said most were like "Uhhh, are you really serious about me having to do put up the title on my car?" Didn't they read that part or what? :doh5:

Apparently this wasn't as big a problem in the midwest and back east. That's why they're not going to make at least the first tapes in cali. This is unbelieveable. :eek6:

The laws havng to do with "SPECTATORS" changed a lot of the modern street racer wanabes that mostly posed. After the watchers went away it was like"WINKING AT A GIRL IN THE DARK".
Races for money are still aroound, but rare.
Enough of them are still going and the show should do ok.

i'm doubting that his car is as fast as he says it is.......low-mid 13's with only bolt ons; no susp. no tires. an 89 formula is a 15 second car, when it was new.

Perhaps a bus pass for the loser might ease the pain.
It really depends on the buddy system.
If tou win, the buddy can drive your other car home, if you lose your going to need a ride.

The reaction has been you love it or you hate it. The key is everybody will watch it.
Posers turned into racers, and then into public transportation by the winner.
PNG has a press release to put up from SPEED VISION.

I didn't get to see the program. I was leaving for work and only caught the quick "when we come back after the break" comment he made regarding a new show for the Speed channel where contestants win each others cars. I was hoping somebody caught it.

I'm hearing the same love it of hate it attitude over here too. It should be interesting to see how it turns out.
