Manual or auto? If auto, you have to drop the pan usually.

auto, and thats what i was guessing. so when you take off the pan, is the ammount of fluid in the tranny greater than the volume of the pan = go everywhere when you take it off? or is there some tequnique to taking it off?

I would recommend letting a shop handle it. Dropping the pan does not get all the old fluid out, you also have to cycle the tranny fluid through the lines.
There's always going to be fluid still trapped in the torque converter and cooler loop. That's why a true flush by a transmission shop is a good idea if you want to get it all cleared out.
