I am about to acquire a 1987 Supra. THe thing is fast as hell, the only problem is its too heavy. I think it weights like 36 or 3700lbs. Do you have any ideas on how i can reduce the weight? I already know I am going to take out the back seat because people try to bum rights all the time. What else is there......that I can do at home with a good amount of tools and 3 extra friends?.......and a small amount of money.
Also it is street legal. I want to keep it that way.
Any Info will be really helpful...thanx...

i thought you were talking healthwise. anyways take out your AC, replace your hood with a carbon fiber hood.

take the spare tire and jack out. rip out all the carpet and sound dedening (door pannels too) take out all of your a/c equipment. take out all of the pannels in the hatch back. take out the rear windshield wiper system (if it has one). take out the headlight washer system/windshield washer system. get rid of your center console, and the headliner and dome light. get rid of the radio, and the antenna system.

lmao same here. anyway, you have loads of options but some of it is expensive. like black komet said, you can replace body parts with carbon fiber pieces, not the cheapest way to do it but hey it works. u can also replace ur glass with lexan windows. take out backseats like you said is a good option. another thing that will save a lot of weight is taking out the carpeting and the sound deadening material. some sound deadening stuff is like fabric which is much easier to take out compared to the sticky shit some cars have. on top of that u can get a shop to take off that stuff that coats the underbody forgot wat its called. only bad part is that the inside looks like crap and you wont be able to hear people talking next to you going over 40 or so lol. also, a lot of aftermarket stuff is lighter than stock parts (exhaust, wheels, etc.)

I don't think lexanon certain windows is street legal (windshield and driver and passenger doors. Remove any stereo equipment. Remove any cosmetic interior panels.
After gutting your car you might want to invest in a radio headset so you can talk to your passenger..get one with a hidden ear piece...cops don't like if you have headphones on while you are driving.
You can always pay 10K+ for a full tube frame. j/k
And as always...go on a diet.

Don't bother.
Yes, you can strip a couple hundred pounds off the car without too much issue...but what does it get you? .2 seconds off the quarter time is hardly worth having to live with a gutted car day in and day out.
Besides, it's a Supra. It'll never really be light. :P

If it's fast already, then why does it really matter? Just mod the engine to make up for extra weight I guess. But it's like Shadydave just said, don't bother gutting it, because .1 second on the 1/4 mile fore each 100 pounds you lose is not worth it, unless you're just gonna drag with it all the time anyway.
Yeah like those guys said, not much can be done. It's already on a no-carb diet (har har har ... sorry I had to do it!).

maybe he wants to lighten it for autocross or drifting. My hyundai was gutted. All interior panals go the gone, Headliner gone, tar stuff on the floor gone, carpet gone, drivers seat only, no spare tire/jack, trunk panel flooring cut out and replaced with light gauge sheet metal, fiberglass hood (custom laid), front and rear bumper bars removed and replaced with tube steel, A/C an all componets remeoved, heater removed, powersteering and all componets removed. It was almoast unbearable to drive day in and day out

taking out the interior for autocross will throw you into Street Mod class in SCCA, regardless of car and other modifications. This is the fastest Street Legal (and pseudo-street legal) class there is.

i can already tell what this schmuck is going to say before he even responds. "duuur i have to drive the car every day so i dont want to do all that"
take out the spare tire and jack and cross your fingers you dont get in an accident. thats about the only good weight reduction you can do.
car makers dont leave some 400 lb lead brick in the back seat for you to magically remove and make a car lighter and faster. its heavy for a reason. if you start removing stuff its going to be less and less comfortable to drive every day. just live with it.
Acid-dip the body panels.

I laugh at people who remove their spare for "weight savings" then get stuck on the side of the road when they get a flat.
If you wanted a light car, you shouldn't have bought a Supra. You've got a car that weighs almost as much as a Ford Crown Vic, making about as much power as a V6 Mustang.

So do you think I should just work on gaining power?

Acid-dip the body panels.
What does that do?

I think you should figure out what your goals are for the car (daily driver, street/strip machine, cone-killer, boulevard cruiser, open track playtoy, etc) and then plan out whatever modifications help you better achieve those goals.
What does that do?
The acid eats eats away at the metal, making it thinner, lighter, and weaker.
NO ONE GOT MY NO CARB JOKE!!! Geez. :(

I wouldn't sweat it that much. They aren't THAT fast and they can be picked up everywhere for a relatively cheap price.

I know!! It was ridiculously weak and obvious, that's what made it so great. :) (Sorry, I like really lame obvious humor.)
hahahahahahahaha
Lotta racers did it back in the day. Wouldn't recommend it for a street car though, I'd imagine it'd crumple like a tin can if you got into an accident.
