I think the laws are very vague and designed so that just about anything can be considered a street race depending on the officers feeling or mood at the moment.
What if you are "speeding" on the e-way , lets say you are goin 75mph, them a car passes you up at 85, at the time he is passing you , a cop sees this, he could probably claim you were street racing or enguaging in a contest of speed.
I do not believe these laws to be to clear, and very vague and honestly , if you had a good lawyer, how could they stand up in court, assuming the above mentioned senario happened?
I think the way it is written gives the police too much leeway into what they can do or interpret as a street race, and is probably written that way assuming most racers are young kids and wouldnt fight it in court, jusy my humble opinion.

basically a race is when two or more people are trying to drive as fast as they can, accelerating as much as possible whenever possible, this is clearly different than cruising down the highway at 75 mph.

I know that as you do and many others , but the paw does not clearly state that! I think it does not for a reason, it is very vague!

Actually, the Florida law regarding street racing defines it as a contest between two or more vehicles on a public road to reach a certain speed, distance, or location first. This can be seen as regardless of how much the vehicles were speeding if at all.

if you are talking about a "Speed Contest" it doesn't matter how fast you're driving.. it's just a matter of 2 ppl trying to go faster than the other guy.. if you were going 70MPH and saw the guy coming up at 85 and you sped up to try to catch him.. it can be argued that you were involved in a "Speed Contest".. if you were cruising at 75 and didn't alter your speed you could get popped for speeding.. in that case i'd explain what happened in court.. but it's still a 50/50 chance that you'll get found guilty..

actually you can get one with only 1 car. It's possible to be in a speed contest with a clock.

haha you're right.. i also forgot that you can be going zero miles per hour and get a ticket for that.. burn out.. brake stand.. whatever you'd like to call it.. or even revving your engine.. it just depends on the cop that's writting the ticket..

they usually write up burnouts as exhibition of speed or exhibiton of acceleration though, which is a different section in most states, usually with milder penalties.

ya.. it depends where you're at.. i got popped for a burnout a few years ago.. misdermeanor offence.. i guess becuz i wasn't lined up next to somebody is reason i got hit with exhibition of speed.. if me and another guy were lined up.. i'd probably have got a speed contest ticket instead..

I say its a waste if you do a burnout for any reason unless you have Drag Rubbers, which need heat to work better. But if you have regular radials or Z-radials, why even do a burnout? lol.... Granted it looks sick, but it doesn't do much for you unless you need to, in order to achieve maximum grip. You might just end up getting one of those exhibition of speed tickets if you risk doing so...

From the San Mateo city website... (http://www.ci.sanmateo.ca.us/dept/codes/ch11-12.html)
11.12.050 EXCESSIVE ACCELERATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES. It is unlawful for any person operating a motor vehicle within the city to so accelerate the same as to cause audible noise by tire friction on pavement or to cause the tires of said vehicle to leave skid marks upon the pavement, except when such acceleration is reasonably necessary to avoid a collision. Any person violating this section shall be guilty of an infraction, which shall be punishable under and to the extent of the laws of this state for infractions. (Ord. 1992-11 § 3 (part), 1992; Ord. 1979-10 § 1, 1979).
Damn, I'm even better-informed than you about your own town's laws...

Of course you don't get it. Let me spell it out.
By spending a total of about thirty seconds on Google, I was able to find the exact code section and post it here. For a town I don't even live in, no less.
I'm beginning to see a pattern.
