I drive a 1988 Volvo 740 turbo with an automatic transmission. The car is kept in good condition but last night i was driving and out of nowhere (75 mph+) i continued to press on the accelerator and the rpms just kept going up like it was in neutral but i was in drive. I was luckily able to roll into a gas station due to the speed that i was going and was able to get towed home after an hour and a half wait with AAA. Any idea what the
problem could be? Transmission fluid is ok but when i try to put it in any gears its like its in neutral and when idling in park the car stutters like crazy.

Thanks for any help.

Note: I was also doing some work on the car earlier that day, i took headers off to replace gaskets due to an exhaust leak, im not sure if i may have not put something back in place or something but im positive i did, hopefully
its just a wierd coincidence and has nothing to do with what i was working on?
