Well i am in auto class the other day and this kid starts talking shit about his grand am. Well he was like my car can beat your car, and stupid things like that. I was like yea it prob will, i am always the first to admit that my car is not fast, it is not even close. Then he proced to say how he smoked a 86 vette. I looked over at him and was like you think your Grand am 3.1l could take my freinds trans am 5.7l 97? And being the gooch he is he said yes. Well here is a lil bit about his car.... He claims he puts out 260 FWHP, cause he bought a chip of ebay. He has no muffler just straight pip, and a home made air intake {IE took the hose out of the stock filter and put a cone air filter on} He has more rust than i have ever seen on a car. Later i over here him say that he has done a port polish, and bored it out...And i am thinking to my self with the stock auto trani??? Hmmm I was told that his year/make of car only came stock with about 153 hp at the crank. So over 100 more hp and that trani can handle it? I do not think that this is possible.. Your thoughts on this?? Well i will post prob tues after we walk on him with the trans. Well if he does win i will give him props on one of the best looking sleepers i have ever seen.

his car is probably slower than stock, I'd be suprised if he could break into 16's.

What about the LT1? Is it bone stock?

I'd call for a dyno sheet on the Grand am.

86 corvettes do not run 14 flat.

yeah the trans am is still stock. He is planning on working on it over the winter as a project car. It will be pretty sweet when all is said and done with it though. Yeah i heard, the 3.1's can't be bored out any more than they already are from the factory. Also this person with the GA has not nice intake no bigger throttle body than the org, nore a big exhaust. so i basically called the BS flag on his ass. He says he has dyno it, but i have yet to see a dyno sheet. Well we will know soon enough because if he truley does have 260 whp he should be able to keep up or pass the trans.

I cannot think of any factory production engine that cannot be overbored.

Actually, the 5.0 Mustangs were the fastest back then with a 14.9. I'm not certain about the Vettes but that was definately an era of slow cars for the most part. 14's today really are'nt fast at all.

I cannot think of any factory production engine that cannot be overbored. I heard that it has something to do with a weak block. Not sure though. Can any one validate this or not? Also told the guy that it was on with the trans am and he backed out. And was like let me go get my friends car and than we will talk. I just find it weird that one day he talks sh*t about his car than a few days from the race he is all like dude its a trans am, he'll walk on me. I was just like it should be close since you are claming 260 whp.

Theres several engines that won't accept overbores due to thin material. It "can" be done but at the risk af overheating. And if too much power is put to them, breakage.

What year Grand Am? Mine runs 13's. 13.86@97mph to be exact. You must be talking about the old ones if it has a 3.1........99+ Grand Am's have a 3.4

There is no reason he can't have a P&P with some head work done on either the 3.1 or 3.4.

But sadly yes, if he has a 3.1 with straight pipes and some sort of crap intake he is slow......not as slow as your avenger tho :)

3.1L is 155 FWHP and has the 4t4t-e tranny. The tranny itself can actually handle up to and no more than 220 crank HP. It can not be bored at all. Its as big as it can get at stock. he can P&P the heads and manifold but costs up into the 2K range for such a thing. It cant be done by an unexperienced person either. To top that off it does no good to P&P the mani if ya dont have a bigger TB and it has to be around 60mm, nothing smaller or its a waiste, stock TB for 3.1L is 55mm. This kid has nothing. I want to race him. All i have is 200-220, not sure at this point (no dyno until after my headers get installed). Ill show that punk bastard whats up.

Some do, some dont. Quite a few l98 vettes have done high 13's stock, but mostly around 14.0-14.2

not as slow as your avenger tho Sadly yes the avenger is slow but i have never denied that. Nore tired to pull it off as something that it is not. But it gets me where i am going for now. I am hoping to get a TSI all wheel drive in the spring. That should be a little bit faster.
