this is a noob question... but is there a major difference between motorcross gloves and sport bike gloves?

It looks like there is...

can someone explain the difference? cause i'm looking for something that would help me on my mountain bike right now, and something that i can use for my future sport bike down the road.

it would be nice to have a glove that i can use in both worlds. thanks

Falls on dirt bikes are usually at pretty low speeds across surfaces with low coefficients of friction, studded with the occasional rock and branch. Off-road gloves tend to be made of light-weight, breathable material with some sort of impact protection on the knuckles and the back of the hand for that reason.

Falls from a sportbike tend to be at higher speeds on very abrasive surfaces. The main design criteria for road and racing gloves should be protecting you from friction.

I'd say that you're better off just buying two sets of gloves, since even two pairs of premium ones cost less than one trip to the ER. Gloves, like helmets, are "consumable" and need to be replaced every year or two even if they haven't been damaged. Take it from someone who has killed several pairs of gloves in street and track crashes - you'll be very, very glad you spent the extra money.

You can find dirt bike gloves for only around $30 or so. Expect to spend around $80-100 for a set of streetbike gloves. Completely different.

I spent 75 dollars on my streetbike gloves. Trust me when i say it. They are worth it.

fox, alpinestars, thor, msr, no fear, i mean the list goes on for protection gear. mainly the dirtbike gloves do have a padded palm, some gloves even have little grippies on the two outside finers, the ones closest to you thumb for clutching and braking, and they do have some finger/knuckle protection, it depends on what you like and if you like a name brand, me personally i ride fox. i just happen to like fox though so.
