theres soooooo many diesel and turbo diesel cars here in the uk i might actually consider a turbo diesel. they do have a potential for more power and all of the turbo diesels ive been in can get up and go pretty quick, gotta love shitloads of torque.

im not too sure on something though which would be faster in a race. ill use the bmw 320i and 320d as an example.

320i - 168bhp @ 6250rpm
155lb ft @ 3500rpm

320d - 150bhp @ 4000rpm
243lb ft @ 2000rpm

looks to me like the 320d would ass rape the 320i, this right?

That I knew, Ricky, I am not really a stranger to diesel performance. The thing the thread starter isnt looking at is the RPM ranges of the 2 given engines. It may have more torque but the redline of that particular engine is probably where it made the peak horsepower.

What do you think of the comparison between the 2 cars, Ricky?

there is an aftermarket over here but i dont know how big. thered some sort of engine management system for turbo diesels that claims 40% more torque and 30% more hp. then theres cranking up the boost. those two things alone would take a 320d from 150bhp/243lb ft to over 200bhp and probably about 300lb ft.

whats this? the "used to be ricer" may know something afterall? been pondering about turbo d's for a good few months now.

EDIT: yea there is a higher rpm range on the gas version but the diesel would be geared to compensate for this to a certain extent. not to mention the amount of torque the diesel makes and how low in the rpm range its made at

diesel is the shit, i worked on them at tech school for a while. this guy came with a 4x4 with a cummings turbo diesel, he had mods and lots of them, propane injection ect, he used to do 4 wheel burn outs, that thign had some serious torque.

wth?.. is that the same thing as adding nitrous to a gas engine?

rob i thought hydrolocking only involved a water-caused engine failure.

wolf, i believe sequential turbos are different, like what the fd rx7, or supra has

sumbitch.. haha. havent heard that since i lived in south florida.

rob.. what the hell do you think ill do to a turbo d is i got one? damn. there is such thing as going overboard, which i intend not to do. what i would do is up the boost a bit and get a chip or some sort of engine management system then just the basics, i/e, etc..

that's cool about the propane.. cleaner and more power.. don't diesel engines also wear better than gasoline engines due to the fuel lubricating the cylinders & rings?

would it be worth looking at just plain old diesel cars? reason im asking is i was minding my own buisness and noticed an older mercedes for sale. i had a look at it, looks ok but havent been inside, under the hood, etc.. its a 300 diesel. the engines a 3.0l 6 banger. oh... and its rwd :D

straight diesel doesnt seem like itd come off a light as quick as a straight gas car.

i found out the power (or lack of) figures for the 3.0 diesel. allthough its a 3.0 6 cylinder the thing only makes 109bhp and 127lb ft. dont think ill be too interested in that.
