This is an engine that is for my friends 1987 Scottsdale truck, since he blew his 305. We got a 1978 350 out of a 3/4 ton suburban yesterday, so now we're going to start building it. Maximum cost is now 800 dollars since we spend 200 on the engine (which runs well).

Carb - Holley 670 Street Avenger
Heads - Vortec Iron
Intake - Edelbrock Vortec Performer intake
Headers - Dynomax Cerami-coat headers
Cam - this one
Hes going to have all factory accessories including AC, but we're going to run an electric fan. Any thoughts/opinions? I was toying with the idea of a carb spacer, since he has lots of room under the hood.

According to Engine Analyzer this engine could make 360hp and 412 lb/ft

Is the truck an automatic or a standard? If its auto you will need a small converter with that cam. It also maybe a little bit hard to keep cool with an electric fan.

Of course it depends what kind of low RPM performance you're looking for, but:

1. The duration looks a liitle high to me, particularly if you're running an auto with a stock converter. I'd aim for a max of about 220 degrees intake duration, say 225 exhaust, both at 0.050.

2. I'd lean towards a 110 degree lobe spacing instead of a 108 for improved idle.

3. Lift looks great, but probably near (or beyond) the limit of what stock springs can take. You need to check for coil binding, particularly if the springs have been shimmed. If the spring binds, cam and lifter death are assured and immediate.

4. I'd call up Isky and ask them. They really know what's going on, unlike the Bozos at Comp Cams. I've run an Isky cam in the past; I got great tech help and a great product.

Yeah I already know I need to run LT4 valve springs, and we are planning on throwing in a vette converter, or a BM 2400 stall converter. The trans is a 700R4 and the truck has 4.10 gears.

Im thinking about this cam instead now, seems more sane.

you may want to check and see if FAL makes an Electric fan for the 350. that ones electric andn should work fine

I just noticed a factory Lt1 cam gives it 390hp and 390 torque. LT1 cam > all.

I can use most universal fans, probably the Black Magic fan which pulls 3000 cfm or so.

Do you already have the vortec heads, the carb, the intake and headers lying around? If not you are going to blow that budget fast.

Heads are 300 on ebay, carb is 250 (have it) cam is 128. Headers are 250. So we're a little over, but not too bad since we wont be buying it all at once.

Much better IMO. In general, I don't like the idea of a loose torque converter in a truck, particularly if you are planning on towing with it (heat). Since you can lock up the 700R4, maybe it's not too much of a concern...

Dont think of it as a truck, because it isnt going to be used as one. Just picture it as a Chevelle or something. Its not going to be towing or hauling anything more than 2 people.

I like the second cam a little better for a stock converter. If you plan on changing the converter run the first cam. It sounds like just about the same combo, less the cam, that Im running in the Camino.
