4WD is for off road use and should be turned off when driving on-road
AWD distributes power in varying degrees to all four wheels automatically when it detects wheel slippage. AWD cars arent usually designed for serious off-roading

The first time my dad drove a real 4wd he sort of forgot this fact and couldn't go around corners very well :haha: :haha: :haha:

4wds have a locked differential as to get 25% power to all wheels no matter the situation.

An AWD is, basically, a syatem that uses an open, quafe, or limited slip differential to send power to whatever wheel is slipping. If all tires are gripping the differential doesn't have to work and the car is now FWD.

The Skyline is the acception to this rule since when it has grip it is inherently RWD.

Ok, here is the right answer.

Four Wheel Drive has a locked center diff, but may not distribute power evenly to all 4 wheels. That also depends on the diffs in the axles. Can be part time or full time.

AWD has a variable center differential, which means it can send different amounts of power to the front or rear wheels. This is why it doesnt push like 4x4 does on the highway, because the front and rear axles may turn at different speeds. AWD is full time.

You can drive 4x4 on the roads, it just wont handle well. Some trucks although have a maximum speed you may go in 4x4.
