What are signs indicating that your timing is off?

It takes me forever to acellerate to where i feel power... but ill see if it is really the timing... any other suggestions on what it can be?

A. Your car will idle like shit

B. If severly off the engine will bog/ sputter/ spit lots of white smoke from the tail pipe

C. If [b]Really[\b] off it will send valves into the pistons , bending valve stems and scarring piston heads.
