first off, i had my car smogged today, and even though i do not require it to be done.
(no emission regs here in Edmonton Alberta)
i would like to know if each car has its own set of standards or if its a straight across the board thing, i.e. the same set of rules for all cars.
if anyone can get a hold of the info for me that would be great, as i would like to do a comparison. (i had the readings printed out for me)
in the case that the regs are for each car, my car is a 1991 pontiac firefly 1.0L, 61 CID, 3 CYL, TBI, engine model G10
(AKA geo metro)

that info would be hard to find, definitely.
but I'm pretty sure that California Smog laws are one of the most strict in the US.
thanks to all those enviromentalists.

From the top of my head
Passing is less than or equal to the amount:
Idle
HC-100PPM
CO-1.0%
2,500RPM
HC-100PPM
CO-1.0%
I don't now the NOx measurements yet. Since we're only "Basic Area" certified. :(
Ofcourse newer model cars have stricter limiits.

well looking at the printout, what do you think the numbers would be with out a cat?
the numbers on the printout are a little hot without the cat (thats how it was tested) i hit about 2000 HC-ppm when i let off the gas from about 4500 rpm, but at the same time my A/F ratio jumped from 16.3 to 54.1. i guess that i can be thankful that i don't live in california.
thanks TRD

The car isn't tested @4500 RPM. And when you let off the throttle, your car will lean out, causing it to hit 2000HC (which could be normal w/o a cat).

oh yeah, don't get me wrong, that was what the mechanic wanted to see.
the 2500 rpm sniff was 277 HC-ppm
0.79 CO-ppm
2.95 O2-ppm
12.0 CO2-ppm
how do those check out?

Those are pretty good readings for a car with out a cat. If you had a cat, your HC would probably be around 20-50PPM. CO would be around 0.30% This is just my rough estimate

Yeah, but your car will still fail.

like i said, i don't live in a city with smog regs, so i'm happy that they are not too bad.
