Hello everybody!

Um.. I understand that you guy's now know that I am NOT 16. I AM 13. But I would like to know the basics upon using the clutch from these points:

Backing out,
Taking off from a stand still,
Switching from 1st to 2nd ect.,
How to start the car in gear.

Now I want to know how to use the clutch like how to know when to push the gas in.

And I do understand that you guys can't explain via interet. But I just need to know the basics then I will apply when I start driving next year. (I'll be 14 this June 28th). So after I learn how to drive I will put this into practice. Thanks a lot guys!

Every car's clutch feels different. Once you actually get the hang of it you could drive any other car but you will probably notice the difference. It's easier said than done. When you actually drive a car and get a feeling for the clutch, try to find the point where the will shut off when you release the clutch. It is usually halfway out, and you will feel the car shake a little right before it shuts off. At that point you want to feed the car just a little bit of gas as you realese it more. When trying to do this Just remember two important things. DON'T BE NERVOUS!!! And it would help if you practice where your not around a lot of cars. After you learn and actually drive in the street just remember to not be nervous, when you do and their are cars behind you most people choke and mess up at an intersection.

In my opinion, no amout of online description will assist him in learing to drive stick, it is just somthing he needs to go out and practice. I remember drivers ed, we discussed the basics of driving a stick, and i figured "hell, I can do this". Boy was I wrong, my mom got a stick a year later and she went with me to learn. The whole experience was a mess, all a manual transmission is about is timing, which is usually not a god given talent, but rather is based on practice. So my advice to SpeedRacer is to find an empty parking lot and try to learn with a parent. Oh yea, doesn't Illinois suck balls?:p

Don't worry kid, it only took a day for me to learn how to drive a stick. If it took me one day, it will take you less time...Once you learn, you'll see what Diavolo was talking about in his tutorial.

Driving a stick isn't as hard as it looks... it took me days to get familiar with it though (hehehe... i'm kinda thick!) But anyway have someone experienced next to you and teach you. It's easier that way!

Driving a stick is a hands on learner my friend.

i suggest when you first get in take some time to just shift through the gears before you even start the car. Get used to the motions and where the gears are. Dont be in a rush.

after that with the car started and clutch pushed in slowly (i mean very slowly like slow motion slow) let it out til you feel the car just start to lift then press it back in. o this for a while til you get the feel of the car.

make sure there is nothing in front of you and there is a liscensed driver in the car who knows how to drive.

hey bro' i also learned to drive a stick at 14, try some of these tips:

1. go to an empty parking lot and practice starting and stopping
2. let the clutch out very slowly, maybe try counting to 20 as you let the clutch out, by going slow you will notice the feel of the clutch as it grabs. if you let it out too fast it can feel like there is only two opions, either in or out.
3. ask the person with a license to get out and just watch(not likely).ask them to just be quiet and sit there and relax

4. most important!!! sit back, relax turn the radio just do it.

what ever you do don't ever take the car out w/o your dad knowing and get it towed away, that is bad.

yes especially dont crash into the garage door.

But that was the biggest mess i ever got to make without paying for it. (with money anyway)

i practiced driving manual a couple of times (way more than what people here say it took for them to learn), and I quit beacuse it was too hard to get from N to 1 smoothly . Of course I can do it with jolting, loud reving sounds, having the car about to stall... etc. I can never do it smoothly like the feel of an automatic. Something's wrong with me.. :(
I either always press too much gas or I let out the clutch too much.. and I can't tell which one so I can't correct it.
