I was coming home from the Toronto Auto Show (I live in Canada). I was pretty hyped up about all those cool cars and I felt like I needed a race. I was just cruising around when I spotted a RX-7. First I thought it was a Ferrari since the back looked like a 360 Modena. I came right up to the side of it and found that it was a '93-'96 RX-7. I have seen the car before parked in the mall I work at. From the outside the car had a pretty good amount of stickers of performance companies. From inside he pretty much had some painted interior objects and I saw that it was an automatic tranny. It also had this huge as HKS exhaust. So anyways I get right up to the side of the RX-7 and look to see who was the driver. It was some Chinese guy with another guy riding shotgun. The driver looks at me and I nod my head asking him for a race. So he gets into a lane with no traffic and I follow. We finally come to a stoplight. Lined up side by side I couldn't even imagine that I was racing such a car. My only thoughts were "don't stall, don't stall." The light turns green and we're off. I get a pretty good launch, but that couldn't make up for the RX-7's rotary power. As I shifted into second he had pulled a car and a half lead on me. By third he had pulled about a five car lead one. Then knowing that he had smoked my ass he slowed down so see how I felt about the race. I pulled up to his side and gave him a thumbs up. Got to give respects.
I didn't feel bad about the race, keeping in mind that my car is completly stock. But it was my first time racing a car of such calibur. Boy those cars are fast. Well I got to save up my money now and find a way to get a rematch out of this guy.
Peace.

i dunno i can't give honest respect to people who drive automatics. it's like, way to step on the peddle man. a driver really can win or lose a race from skill, and autos just don't allow that kind of competition.
anyone read they made a 911 turbo auto? what a shame.

I agree with SW20... I can't give any respect to anyone who races in automatics. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages but in a manual tranny those autos will gain on you when you shift. Kind of unfair to me.
They also have those "clutchless stick shifts" and "paddle shifters" in development for the newer cars. Might be cool for some lazy driver, but for most auto enthusiasts it just sucks.
btw, I didn't even know that FD's were available in auto. lol.
I never see RX-7s from where I'm from, not even the FC's. Oh well :(
Just my 2 cents :)

sounds like a great race man. Good job on the run! and no I dont think its unfair to race a stick against an auto. On the streets, its: race what you brung.

how could you tell it was an auto from sitting next to him?

Don’t get me wrong, I dislike racing automatics too because they can’t really mess up but I love the challenge.
For everyone who is complaining about stick vs. automatic: I think if you really know how to drive stick then it wouldn't matter about the other car, even if it is an automatic.
Don’t assume a car is an automatic. I’ve been asked if my car was an automatic after a race even though it isn’t. I think that is the best compliment you can make to a driver. If someone needs to ask that question then that means the person can slam gears so fast you can’t tell. That constitutes a good driver and that person won’t complain about the other car being an automatic.

I would think the automatics would be slower because the gear ratios are different than on a manual version.

you will actually find that a lot of very fast drag cars use autos as the gears tend to be longer and you dont lose as much time during gear changes. This can be overcome by having very fast changes but if you really want to drag race an auto is the way to go. There are 8 and 9 second cars here that are auto and only get the times they do because they are auto.
Dont get me wrong, i love manuals and would never buy a perfomance car that is auto, apart from a twin turbo soarer or a 20B cosmo( drool!!!!!!). The only thing against autos is that they are crap for racing where you have to corner. If it is just straight line you are after an auto is worth considering.

I knew that the car was auto, because I have seen the car before parked in the mall that I work at. Being that it is a RX-7 drew me towards the car. I took a look around and when I looked inside the car there was an auto shifter.
