I asked a question yesterday about superchargers..I was givin a link to go to howstuffworks.com to find out how one operates. I went there and read everything on superchargers. And they don't seem to go into to much detail on how they mecanically work. I know there not as 'effitient' as a turbo and why there not as 'efficient'. And that they work on the same principle 'forced induction'

But is there a good example of how one operates. I am curious because i have herd good things about them on V8's. Do they benifit any engine with low to mid compression?

Any help would be great..

a supercharger is basically a fan that blows air into the engine powered by a belt running off the engine so it takes power to make power.

Roots blower, imagine 2 large 3 lobed rotors, they spin so that the lobes trap air and force it out the bottom of the blower into the motor, attatched to the crank by a belted pulley.
A twin screw, 2 large "screws" think more like a drill bit actually, they trap air at the front and it gets pushed back by the vanes on it and out into the motor. the vanes are like threads on 2 screws that interlock and push air. uses a belted pulley like the others do.
A centrifugal SC is alot like a large turbo compressor side, its turned by a belt, spins more RPM then the other 2 but its smaller so it needs to. its just an impeller in a round housing, or scroll, the impeller spins like a fan and pulls air in and compresses it there in the housing, shoots out of the scrolls exducer (the really big hole that goes into the motor ;)) and voila, a blower.

forced induction is the most flexible way of making power, you can double & triple the "size" of your motor by feeding it 3X the air it could hold without FI by compressing it, you also get this without making it bigger or much heavier, it works well on any engine, V8 or I-4.
