View Full Version : Interest/Opinions on new PS/PS2 streetracing game

I posted this in General Talk but figured it would be a good post in here too....

I am thinking about contacting one of the major game manufacturers for Playstation here in a little while about possibly making/designing a game based on and around the popular activity of streetracing. I wanted to get some opinions and see if there would be interest in making a game like this. I know on this site there would probably be a ton of interest. These are the things that I wrote down just brainstorming up the idea... Feel free to add your own opinions and additions to the game. I plan on drawing them all up and presenting it to a game manufacturer and maybe getting some clear insight into whether or not they ever plan on making something like this. If you think about it there is NO games available for dragracing on the playstation.... I don't know if it's because they don't think it would be fun or that it would be too repititious after awhile. There is certainly a HUGE audience for it especially if you design it like Grand Turismo with many cars/modifications... I think that if they throw in the streetracing side of dragracing that it would make for a much more enjoyable game. Here's some of the ideas I came up with...

1. I was thinking of a name like "King of the Street" or something to that effect.

2. In the game like most other car games you would start off with a certain amount of money to purchase some low level streetracing vehicle. Car purchasing could be similar to Grand Turismo with used and new vehicles available for purchase. I'm thinking that a virtual city would be a better idea for a streetracing game... You would have to interact with other computer AI "streetracers" to learn where the hotspots are all while avoiding the police.

3. Car modifications would have to be huge... Everything from slicks to turbo's to nitrous to superchargers. Gearing, tire height, weight reduction, could all be factors in how a car performs. And the selection of cars could be huge too...

4. I think having a real time "planner" would be a good thing where during the week you could plan who you were going to race as well as wager money on the race calling out different racers of different skill levels and speeds based on where you were currently. The racer on the TOP of the list would be the current "King of the Street"... It's your job to get where he's at and then stay there.

5. Police intervention would be a big thing in this game. Possibly on the screen somewhere would be a police scanner (like many people bring to the streetraces) and police busts would happen during the streetraces. During the streetraces if you happened to get caught during a streetrace you would be fined, ticketed, license revoked, or car impounded depending on the nature of the offense (I was thinking the faster and more street illegal your car got the more pricey the tickets and the more likelihood you would have you ride impounded)

6. The actual racing itself would be pretty self explanatory. Instead of a christmas tree you could have a person dropping his hands, flashing a flashlight, dropping a handkerchief.... You would start race all the people you called out during the week or people that called you out you would have to race. The ideas behind the modifications would be cool too.... If you run nitrous you would have a certain amount of nitrous. Use it during a run and it starts running out. If you plan on racing 5 times during the evening you had better pony up money for spare bottles or something.... Also you could make your car manual or automatic and switch during the game to make your car more competitive. During the races the police scanner could start flashing red and blue which means the cops are on their way or about to arrive.... The racing spots could go from crappy back roads where damage to your car is likely if you happen to lose control and venture offroad to full blown paved roads out in the boonies that were meant to streetrace on.... There could be alot of variables in what happens at the different racing spots.

7. I am thinking with the current deal with PS2 and the ability to link on the internet that this game could be HUGE with people from accross the country talking shit and challenging each other for big money races..... If you've got an 8 second Camaro who's to say that the dude with the AWD Turbo and nitroused Jun skyline on the east coast couldn't give you a run. How much balls do you think your car has?????? The limits of this game could be endless!!!!!

I think the only reason no game companies have touched drag racing games is because they think that track dragracing would get boring after awhile which when I think about racing on PS or PS2 in a straightline again and again just might get old. But throw in the variables of "STREETRACING" and you just might have a game that is limitless in playtime and enjoyment..... I was thinking that no company would touch streetracing cause of it's current state with law enforcement and how it's looked down upon by numerous state and local police agencies BUT then again I look at games like Grand Theft Auto 2 and on there they are killing cops and running over vehicles with tanks and I think "damn, if cops aren't mad about this then I don't think they will be with a streetracing PS2 game!!!!" Lemme know what you guys think!!!! I'll start drawing up some design ideas once I gauge the interest!!!! L8R.. And sorry so long just had to fully describe my idea....

Sounds like a good idea, but what happens when you loose your liscense in the game???? I mean people would not want to sit there and wait for there liscense peoples attention span is very small, a game like this is very costly you haft to get the cars detail them hear the sounds of there exaust etc..

Not if Sony was to do it.... Uhhh as far as losing your license I suppose you would just drive at the streetraces without it but that also would up the chances that you would be arrested if you were caught again (getting arrested would be like a 500-1000 dollar cost because of bail) Either way you're losing money but not having a license puts you in a higher likelihood of being brought downtown.... I wouldn't expect anybody to wait until they get their license back. Hell it's a streetracing game so who needs a damn license???? :)

Hey Sup they kinda got a game like that out now for the ps2 called midnight club street racing, you start with like a cab and work your way up, in the beggining you have to follow some cars around and they take you to race, once you win you get their car, its pretty cool, but theres no names or anything, i.e Honda, Ford. you should check it out

I really like your idea, a game like that becons to be released, but I think PC is the way to go, Online, server side, so people can't cheat. If you did not know there is a game coming out called Motor City Online which follows the same idea, just that they're using classic cars. IMO this game would be more sucessful if todays cars were in it, including Japanese and European imports, instead of dwealing on the domestic cars of the past. What a waste of code :(

Yeah I'm gonna get some names and get a better rough draft of the game down on paper and then send out some emails so I can get a feel of interest with some Playstation design teams.... I know the teams looks for ideas from the outside but it's all about finding them..... So in the next week I'll be doing some research and development of the idea and then I'll get with all of ya and try to get some more info.... Thanks for the info guys... And with PS2 having a modem it wouldn't need to go on PC... If a PC company wanted to adapt it then fine but I'll be working primarily with makers of PS/PS2 games....

Midnight racer 2 is comming out soon and it's supposed to be much better than 1. PS 2 is such a piece anyway. It's too hard for game makers to create games on. Just wait for X-Box and give the Idea to them.
