View Full Version : What I think of MetroPCS...

Details...
$40.97 Per month: Unlimited minutes any time, in northern california with voice mail, caller ID and call waiting. 5 cents per minute for long distance.

I bought my phone at Wireless World on Stevens Creek in San Jose on the December the 8th. I figured I would post this up so if someone is considering MetroPCS, they can get some actual customer feedback. So far, I had to purchase the phone for $182.94, with one month free service (no $40.97 for one month). I got poor customer service from the salespeople at Wireless World, though they are just a wholesale outlet for metro PCS as well as other phones and services, with little to do otherwise with Metro PCS. My phone is the Sony Ericsson T206. Toll free calling area includes almost all of northern California, though coverage area is basically the urban/suburban ares of the San Fransisco bay. I chose Metro PCS because I had run up some pretty high phone bills on my AT&T account. As far as the service quality goes... Reception for the phone is somewhat poor so far, where as I seem to get decent reception about %60-%70 of the time. Finding person to person customer service (be it email, mail, or phone) is difficult, if not impossible. After a few days, I was ready to set up my voice mail but was having problems, when I followed the simple directions given, it said I did not have that service though I had specifically asked for and been billed for the "freedom package" (which includes voice mail, caller ID, and call waiting, all of which worked except for voice mail) Later that day, after trying numerous times, I decided I would email MetroPCS's customer service for help. To my surprise, their website has no email, no mail or no phone number to actual customer service. The access they do have is all automated except when it comes to activating your phone or extra services. After unsuccessfully trying to get help from Wireless World, today I called MetroPCS and went through their 'account changing' option in their automated customer service line, which finally brought me to an operator. The operator then told me, after recieving my information, that the voice mail feature had not been added, so she corrected it promptly and immedeately after the phone call, my voice mail became active. So far, the phone has been much better than my Nokia (which just about died on me after 6 months). Though reception is mediocre, I still find the service of good value since now I can talk on my phone all day long where I do get service without worrying about $100+ phone bills. I am also hopefull that their reception quality will improve, since I have been told that Metro PCS is still new and that that may change over time. Metro PCS is easy to set up, and has no contract. If one month you decide you do not want to stay with the service, you can cancel with absolutely no problem. Their website is www.metropcs.com (http://www.metropcs.com)

I hope that this is usefull to anyone looking for a new phone service or considering MetroPCS as a mostly unbiased customer report of MetroPCS.

How much is that plan?

I'd go with MetroPCS if they had any cool phones, but they're all low class cheap looking phones.

Does MetroPCS use a chip? Maybe I can shove it into my Cingular Motorola V70.

(I got a Cingular chip to work in a Nextel phone once)

Nothing beats AT&T. I don't mind paying a grip for more coverage.

yeah i would really only recomend MetroPCS to people who A: always go over on minutes B: don't want to have to have a contract and or C: people who rarely leave the coveraged areas. Yeah for that vmail, just have ur gf call up their customer service and treck around till she finds the option for adding features or changing your billing, and then they hook you up with a representative

My friend got metroPCS and cancelled it the next day! i used to have Cingular, but Cingular SUCKS ASS!! so i got AT&T now. and AT&T is the best (in my opinion), i get 500 anytime, unlimited nights and weekends, free roaming and free long distance.. ALL for only 34.99! (this inlcudes voice mail, caller id, etc.) opposed to 500 anytime, free long distance and 3000 nights and weekend for 39.99 from Cingular

and earl, i get reception most of the time when im in that area..i think its ur phone..

Yeh it all depends on what you want out of your phone. For me, and anyone else who probably likes MetroPCS, it's all bout minutes. I never use long distance, and can handle having someone have to go to VM if they wanna call me occasionally when I'm in a blacked out area. I'm hoping and thinking that MetroPCS reception will expand (and I note that on their website they are hiring technical engineers for the SFbay area to work on service) but reception improving is not something I'm planning on, though it probably will improve. I do not recomend MetroPCS for anyone who has to have a special phone, flawless service or long distance regularily. Though, do note that long distance is only 5 cents per minute.

Cingular now has 1000 anytime minutes + rollover for $39/month. When I had my PacBell/Cingular phone, I never used more than 60-80 of the 120 included anytime minutes anyway. Mainly just nights and weekends (1000 night and weekend minutes).

So far, I have used Sprint PCS, AT&T, MetroPCS, Cingular, and Verizon.

Of them all, MetroPCS just licked balls! The reception was almost non existant in most areas and dropped calls were a norm.

Cingular was second worst. Their customer service was nothing but stupid people that had to keep putting you on hold every 3 minutes and then transfer you to another department. Plus the plans costs more than they should.

Sprint PCS & AT&T were both ok. AT&T had good coverage but not the greatest quality for transmissions of clarity. Sprint PCS was just the opposite, the best sounding transmissions for clarity but very bad coverage for reception.

Currently, I am still with Verizon because the transmission clarity is pretty good and the coverage is excellent. Out of all the phones services I've had, Verizon is the only one that can make a very clear signal through the walls of the building I work in. The transmission of signal has gone bad a couple times in the past and Verizon claims they had a bad node on the antenna station nearest me. The rates seem reasonable, about the same as AT&T.

Too bad they can't make a phone service with coverage of Verizon/AT&T with the clarity of SprintPCS. Now that would be an awesome carrier.

Keep in mind metro is still working out the kinks of being a relatively new service in San Jose.. still expanding and improving..

Overall I'm extremely satisfied with MetroPCS. It doesn't have coverage everywhere, so not having reception when traveling is a bummer, but alas.. it's better then expensive phone bills for going over minutes, or abusing text messaging. (My bill with cingular was over $2,000 dollars.) AT&T has a similar plan.. for $100 a month.. fuck that in my opinion, I only pay $40 with Metro. :) I went to Wireless World on Blossom Hill, friendly salesman.. didn't have any troubles setting it up.. voicemail works just fine, no problems there..went back in the next day and purchased a new phone cover for $10 instead of paying the sticker price of $20.

Good call, I also agree with the points that you just made. Also to be considered is that any metro PCS user can leave Metro PCS whenever they want without paying a single $, so if I went for another year with ATT, and metro's service abilities increased in that year, I would still be stuck with ATT. All depends on the individual though I guess. The only place my phone doesn't work that I go normally is inside the building at my work, and I've had problems keeping myself from getting on the phone at work so it actually personally works to my advantage.

Just out of curiosity, speaking of phone reception, has anyone had any feedback on those little deals you stick on your battery in your phone that supposedly improve reception? I assume they are mostly BS but if there is good word on them, then I'm interested.

Depending on what your provider distributes with their service.. other phones can get pretty pricy too.. but generally they roll the $$ amount of the phone into the initial "sign-up" charge and all that b.s. ..You don't have to go into the store to "re-activate" service per se, that is only one method of payment accepted.. walking the cash into the place you bought your phone, and then they make sure that it stays active.. Mine is done by debit card, so it automatically subtracts the amount each month, and then sends me a text message around the time of withdrawl to let me know. Pretty conveinent. So what if the phone is a little pricy.. It's SOOO worth not having a contract.. figuring that if you mistakenly sign up for some crappy service.. you get to pay the fee for breaking the contract.. which can be assloads, amongst assloads of dollars.. depending on how long you stuck with their service.

cingular offers bend over minutes because you can't use your phone for the full 1000 anyways. You get no service when you try to dial out so often. When I had the phone I had the hardest time making a call. SYSTEM BUSY, SYSTEM BUSY. What If i had an emergency and was getting the SYSTEM BUSY. I was paying $100 a month for Crapular too.

Now I have Nextel and I can say that I'm happy to pay $90 a month. I have unlimited incoming and unlimited 2 way pager. I only have 500 outgoing but nights and weekends are free. It's a service that works.

As you can tell I hate Cingular! :)

Yeah I have also heard the same from cingular.
Also, Diavolo, no you do not need to go to the store every month. You have 3 or for different billing options including using a credit card. They text message your bill to you every month so you are aware of it also. One of the ideas behind the pay per month without contract is that if you do not have money one month, you can skip a month, and sign up again later. With any other service, you must pay regardless. While paying $40 per month is not an issue for me, paying for minutes that I go over is. Also, their service in the bay area has only been up for less than 6 months from what I believe, and there are quite a few areas on the coverage map that are planned expansion areas, so their service area and reception should improve, but at least since I have no contract, I can leave metroPCS whenever I wish. AT&T was nice, but the $60 per month I save from not going over in minutes is great, and knowing I'm not stuck with the service also benefits me. The only disandvantage of MetroPCS is the reception at the moment and possibly phone selection, otherwise price, number of minutes, ease of setup and contract length are probably better than any provider that exists.

Yeah true the service has been alright lately. I mainly just get poor service in the Los Gatos area, and I'm thinking because on their service map, it says that is a 'planned expansion area' so in the future it should be open, besides the fact that I already do get some service there. And that dumb ext. number crap was because I was having problems with my Vmail, but now it should work whenever you call.

im happy with verizon, they get good coverage whereever i go, no one seems to get coverage at my work, but thats why people call my work line. but overall im happy with my service, im not a big talker, so 4750 minutes, and i barely use half, maybe a 1/4. but free nation wide long disatnce, and i get an option of upgrading phones every year. so for 60/month im happy. now i only have 3 bills to pay, phone car and insurance.

Be careful on that one. No response usually equals yes you are fat to any woman.

If you say No you look great she will tell you youre just saying that and get mad.

If you say yes youre extremely fat in that i hate it and I hate you and laugh you can usually get out of it.

But most of the time youre screwed if you answer that question at all.

Hey Vickzun why is that? Whats up with you women and that question anyway?

Uh.. I'm not really sure about that.. if anything it's probably just because we don't really want to hear an answer, per se, it's more of a "I've already decided I look like crap, and I'm kind of just seeing if everyone else agrees.".. It's a lose/lose situation.. if you say no, we'll think you didn't take a close enough look or you're just humoring us for pity's sake.. and if you say yes I'd be prepared for flying objects.. towards your head. Best bet is to say something along the lines of.. Whatever you are, you look beautiful none-the-less and that'll never change in my eyes.. bla..bla.. something mushy.
