Ok,well,my "check engine" light came on yesterday, much to my dismay. So today i schedule an appointment at the dealer where i bought it (about 40 minutes away) so, realizing i would need gas i went to fill up. Upon opening the gas cover I realized that I had no gas cap, would that mess with the air/fuel ratio or put unwanted air in the gas tank, therefore causing my light to come on, or is this just a coincidence? thanks.

is your car still under warantee? if not absolutely DO NOT take your car to the dealer. They will take you for a fool and rip you for every cent they can. Reset the ECU (easiest way is to disconnect the battery for 30 secs) and then see if the CEL comes back. If it does then have the codes read for free at autozone and work from there. If the car is still running fine it's likely either nothing or just a $15 sensor, but if you take it to the dealer you're automatically spending at least $100.

Missing your gas cap would cause your CHECK ENGINE light to come on. Nothing serious. Try Dr. Disque's suggestion about disconnecting the battery. It worked for me once. :)

It could be the gasoline vapors that is escaping from the opening.

You can take your car to Autozone. They will run the diagnostic for your car for free. I believe this might be for OBDII only though.
