buy something you like, anything can be improved upon.
even if you end up with a car that doesn't have a huge aftermarket following you can always get a nitrous kit.

It really depends on what you like and how much money you have to spend, if you don't like rollin stock make sure you have some cash left over for parts.

it's not the nicest looking car out there but i got a friend that just picked up an 80 sumthin Omni with a turbo 4 banger, can't remember what model it is but i think it had something to do with shelby. they paid $500 all they had to do was put the motor back in the car replace the wiring harness and buy a fuel pump. Can't wait to see it run, supposedly it should run mid 13's - 14 in the 1/4.
yeah it is butt ugly but think how shocked people will be when you stomp em!

If your lookin for sumthin that cheap, you may be able to find an older domestic with a V8, but it might require some body work, or you could probably pick up an old CRX save up another 3-4 grand (not sure about price) and put an LS/VTEC motor into it, that would really scream.

Because of your price range you are gonna have to do some serious searching through the classifides and see what you can find.

here i go with another suggestion.
see if you can find a 1987 VW Scirocco 16V
or a similar year, they shouldn't be to expensive and they corner like hell on wheels, pretty quick too.
