aside from the thread about if a scanner was legal, i wanted to start another thread becuase the other one was really long and i wanted to ask another question. If i wanted to get a scanner where could i do that and how much do they run for? and the other question is if i tapped into a police department frequency then is there any way they can know if i am on it and can they catch me doing this? , other than being pulled over and they see it. and also i live in New York so i would probably have to get oone from out of state dependin on how strict the law was. thanks

If you want to listen to police you will need to get a scanner that has Trunk Tracker. It will allow you to listen to the police without it cutting out on you, when their radios automatically change frequencies. I am guessing you want one for your car. For your car, a scanner with trunk tracker will run around $175 and up. You can find them here. http://www.uniden.com/docs/store/ The Police have no way of knowing that you are listening to them. I don’t know the laws about owning a scanner in New York.

If you go to
www.radioshack.com they explain scanners..
You dont really need trunking tho, just need the Frequence number of the police in your area.. (There is a thread on channels)..
But your must important feature has to be to get the tack 10 frequence in your area, thats undercover cops and other tach forces..
My crew uses a NON trunking scanner ( Because we're cheap fuckers) and it works for us everytime.. LOL.. Never got a speeding ticket or racing ticket in my life.. :haha:

It's true; you might not need a scanner with Trunk Tracker. Some police have not switched over to it yet, or they might have Trunk Tracker I, which is not hard to follow. But if they have Trunk Tracker II or III, you will need to get a scanner with Trunk Tracker. Go to your local Ham Radio store, they know more then Radio Shack about that kind of stuff. You will also need to find out the Trunk Tracker codes.

what do you mean by "tapped"? If you mean pick up the transmissions between cops and dispatch any standard scanner will do. There are more secure in which they use trunking. There is also a lot of cellular phone usage between cops (esp. in sting operations)...I can't tell you how to monitor those freqs. They can not tell whether or not you are using them...the only way they can tell is if they can see the equip. or if they find in you car if while being searched. Unless you are transmitting you can't be detected, all you are doing is pulling the freqs. out of the air, amplifying them and listening to them...can a radio station tell if you are listening to thier station?...no
Channels on a scanner are nothing more than saved freqs. for quick reference (like presets on a car radio).
