i ogtta question about an add in the paper today, it was for a 1986 pontiac trans am. here's the ad. " 1986 pontiac trans am. 350 turbo tranny, 3.09 posi. $500/best"

my question is, is there supposed to be a comma inbetween turbo and tranny, or is there something called a turbo tranny, like some sort of special tranny?? and what does the 3.09 posi. mean??

i'm stumped, but i'd love to have this car if it's not totally been banged up.

i was confused cause if it said 350 turbo, tranny i would think it's a turboed 350ci engine, which i think came in the TA formula turbo correct???

so if it's correct what is a 350 turbo tranny??? is it any good for racing??

"3.09 posi" means that 3.09:1 is the ratio of the ring gear in the carrier. "posi" means that the car has GM's posi-traction. It's basically a limited slip differential.

Its short for turbo-hydromatic. Nothing special about it.

Its a 3 speed auto. The th-350 and th-400 are very popular trannys for drag racing in gm cars. With a little higher stall converter and a shift kit you should be able to easily beat an equal car with a manual.

The higher the number, the better acceleration(assuming you can use it) but the worse top end.
So 4.56s compared to 2.73s will give you better acceleration, but your top end might be now gear limited to around 115mph instead of say 160mph(depending on tranny gearing and rpm limitations of course)

3:09 ratio is prolly pretty good for that car, a little tall for serious racers, but keep in mind that that car has no overdrive gear so you'd be spinnin crazy revs at highway speeds with anything more than 3:50 ratio. The turbo hydromatic trannys are very good for racing like camaro 383 said, similar to ford's C4

i have a feeling that it's been beat to hell, almost all TA's here in elkhart are pretty badly crapped on. but my dream car is a firebird, and now that they stopped making them, i'm interested if i can get it for 500, so what if it's beaten, i'll think of it more like a project car.

Perhaps, but sometimes you just haveto know when to let it go and move on.
