Go to http://www.kbb.com and go to cycles and then to average mileage. That will give you a good average per year. The best miles on a bike are the lowest. I had a 94 cbr with only 19,000 when i got it. I have seen some 94-97 bikes with less than 10k miles. I have seen some bikes like a 2000 f4 with 18k miles, thats alot.

the less miles, the less its been on the road, which means less wear and tear on the bike. Remember this when you get a used bike. Chains/sprockets/tires often need to be replaced. Between those 3 parts, your looking at 300- 600 dollars depending on parts and prices.
Example: cheap=
Bridegstone bt56ss front and back=200$
sunstar sprockets front and back= 40$
chain any brand= 40$
total= 280$ plus shop labor is 50-100$ or more

example: expensive=
metzler mez3's= 300$
vortex billet sprocket back= 75-100$ or more
sunstar front= 20$
regina ors=100$+
total=520$ plus shop labor is 50-100$ or more

Its always good if these parts have been replaced recently, saves you cash. If you or the owner does not know the age of these parts, thats bad news and could be a safety hazard. You do not want to find out that your chain's link is going to bust when you are going 100mph.

Check fork seals and steering head bearings as well. These are parts that do need maintence, and often goes overlooked just to be placed into the hands of a new buyer who then has to fork out 100$+ dollars for repairs.
your best assest when looking for bikes is knowledge, ask lots of questions, and look info up on the web. Lots of times guys want to sell their bad eggs before they completely go rotten and will say anything to get you to buy it. Check to see if the bike has been down and stuff, things like that are automatic price deductions. And if a seller wont be straight forward or lies to you, dont buy his bike. People mights say," oh yeah its been down but frame and swingarm is straight." how do they know? did they take it and get it aligned, frame and swingarm? Is the shim in the front wheel from an unbalanced tire, or from a warped wheel when the bike hit a curb? These are answers that once again you need to know before you test the bike's high speed potential. A shakey front end that catapults you into a massive tankslapper at high speed will make you shit your pants,if the bike doesnt spit you off at 80 mph.

then again, I have ridden bikes that have been down several times and they run fine. I had a bike that had been down 3 times from 3 differnt owners, dent in swingarm, had the whole front end rebuilt after the shocks bent back into the radiator. And i took it up to 120 mph and never had a problem.

So anyways, just some info i thought I would share.

I have a 1978 Honda Goldwing with only 95,000. Just give it a good push and your on your way. Only runs on 3 cylinders and smokes a little bit but not bad for that many miles.
