I think he's looking for the car. Depending on how much of a project you want, you can always check craigslist and ebay. I've seen Dodge Lancers and some Fords on there cheap (like $1000 or so). Great cars to learn about paint/bodywork on. What year-range "muscle car" are you looking for - I consider muscle cars to really be 1964-1970, although technically it refers to everything from 1964-1973.5 with a big-block and meeting a few other criteria. Or are you looking for a late 70's/early 80's muscle car?
Summit racing is decent, but I'd really check out swap meets. And during this latest recession, buyers have really had their pick of parts at them. Gotta be careful what you get, but if you know what you're looking at, you can find some GREAT deals.

Personally, I wouldn't, but to each his own I guess. Keep in mind, Volvo and Saab are not well known for good engineering. If anything, get a 73.5-79 camaro/trans am/mustang. Cheap as anything. Then drop in a good motor. Usually, what people do, is take a volvo 240 wagon and drop in a Ford 5.0 or 351.
