I'm thinking of doing an auto - stick conversion for a 95 civic. Has anyone ever done it? How hard is it. Shops charge like 2k to do it? Is it really that hard for them to be able to charge 2k?

should cost less than 800 if you get all the parts your self

i just did my car. The reson why i think it costs so much is cause its so much work. you have to pull the auto trans out and mate teh manual trans to the engine, you have to get teh 5speed ECU, pedals, cut and weld thru your firewall, all dis labor. Just do it with an engine swap, it would only cost a few hundred more.

Go to www.g2ic.com and ask shenrie about how his swap went, you could search through all his posts, cause he kept everyone updated on his swap. He says he loves it right now. seriously though, he probably will help you out alot

you will need....

- 5 spd tranny
- Clutch and all clutch lines
- Master/Slave Cylinder
- 5 spd ECU
- Shift linkage
- Tranny mounts
- Shifter w/ boot
- Pedals
- New center console (optional unless you don't mind if your car looks gutted)
- New gauge cluster (optional, you can just unplug the "P N R D" lights and put gauge faces over your existing one)

and i know i'm forgetting something... i always seem to forget something vital whenever i list the parts.

all of this can run you up to 800 or so. look for junkyards in your area: www.copartfinder.com or buy parts from www.sohfast.com ... and labor should tack on another 400 or so.. i think? my friend did it on his del sol and it works great. but IMO you should save up and do an engine swap along with the new tranny :)

I don't know on a civic, but on mine it was hell to do :) about $2500 or so in parts ($2000 for a used tranny + $500 in various crap) and I did all the labor on top of that. Like I said I have no idea for you car, but things may be similar: I had to dill a bigger hole in the body for the shifter, drill holes to hold the new pedal assembly, redo the electical, reflash the computer, etc.

now, my mileage went way up, it's more fun to drive, but compared to the automatics I had it's much slower off the line (they were racing automatics though), so it's a good idea to keep that in mind. the car's much stronger when you reach third gear now (it's a 6 speeds)

the bottom line is it's a good idea to think about why you're doing it. If you want to drag race only, building an automatic for racing is way way better than a manual. If it's for other reasons, such as you want to autocross, etc that's another story. it's worth comparing the ratio of the gears too to make sure you're going to get what you expect. for me it was easy, I broke 6 automatics @ $2500 a rebuild each, so that was it :), it's way to expensive for what I want to put in a car. I could have put a stronger unit, but the car wouldn't have been a good daily driver anymore, so I went with a stick.

Like I said, it's something major, and be aware of the hidden costs, like reprogramming the computer if you don't have the tools, etc.
