ok, im taking lessons to get my license on june 8, and im starting to save up for my first bike. i was wondering what a good bike to start out with is. i wanna stay with something relatively cheap (around $4g) and not too much power. i heard the suzuki sv650s is a good bike and i found a couple that i could get for around my price range and i like how it looks too. you guys wanna give me some input on this bike or make other suggestions please?

The SV650S was the bike I first learned on, great bike. =D
The GS500 is good too, lots of aftermarket parts if you want it to go faster. No fairing though.
The Kawasaki Ninja 500R or the ZR-7S are both great starters also, though they seem heavier when you're riding.

hell yeah man...i cant wait to get one...only one more month until i take lessons, and i can get my license the next day. then im gonna put a down payment on a used one cause i dont want to buy a brand new one and then drop it the first month i have it. i need to get some experience first on one that i can handle (like a hayabusa..j/k man...fuck that). when are you planning on getting one?
My mom is slowly warming up to it....mostly because they are very gas efficient....but hey........I'll do it all over the summer.....I got an intership thats paying $15/hr, and i should get atleast $5,000 for a whole summer of work(its only 10 weeks long)......Im thinking maybe an F3 or an older YZF(96-98).....we'll see how it works out.....how are your parents taking this??
Good luck man!
Peace:D

If you were thinking about getting an SV650, it is an AWESOME track bike, I think it's the Honda Hawk GT of the new millenium. It is also a great beginner bike, in that the handling is very forgiving and makes you want to lean deeper into the turns.
started I started on a Gixxer 600 and moved up to the 750 after a year. If you want to ride a safe bike then get a scooter. Better ask Mommy first. LOL!!! All bikes can be dangerous as far as crash protection is concerned so it really doesn't matter to much if you roll acruiser or a sportbike or a standered. It all depends on what you are interested in. I believe that you should start on a bike you like and feel comfortable with. Starting on a small little bike will only get you wanting more fast and having to buy another bike. I know it did for me. I weekend raced the old 600 and rode a 750 in the streets. I'm pretty much looking at a 900-up this year. Yes they aren't as nimble as the 6 but they are more fun IMHO.
Just remeber there are only two types that ride. Those that have fallen...and those that WILL.
lets put it this way.....I would get one....but i want to go to college, and if i get a bike now, then my tution payments stop.....see the dilema?
Peace:D

I learned on a CBR600. It was fun, but a little fast the first like 10 times I rode it. It was hard to get use to, but once you do, they are so much fun.
Just take it slow at first.
Whatever you ride, be careful. Stupid riders give motorcycles a bad name!!!

If I were you I would go to the dealership or bike place like the one if front of the DMV and ask their opinion. When I went there they gave me some good suggestions on what bike I should get. I would really get a used bike first (especially for 4g's) until you get use to it then you can decide if you want something faster after that. I learned off an R1 and have also tried a GSXR600 and like the way the GSXR feels. jJst my suggestion hope it helps... good luck keep us up to date on what bike you end up getting.

Very smart and very true. I don't have any friend that hasn't dropped their bike or almost dropped their bike yet.
